NOTE: While we generally ask that questions about a specific incidence of moderation be taken directly to a moderator, this situation is so uncommon that it should be discussed publicly.
I was asleep, then gone all day, and just got home. Sorry it took me so long to respond, guys!
@Dog Has got it partially right, but there are only three people who can do an internal edit: myself, Ben, and Andrew. And since Ben and Andrew don’t do any modding here for the time being, for all intents and purposes, it’s just me. Partial modding is not unprecedented, but as has been mentioned, it is done very rarely. We would never change the words you write, but we do reserve the right to remove all or some of it.
Here’s what happened in this particular scenario:
Initially, two replies in the ‘spanking’ thread were removed (completely) for being flame-baity. The author of one of them (not @johnpowell) contacted me, and specifically asked me if I could do an internal edit to remove just the flame-bait part of the answer, and restore the rest of it. Since that post was a long one, and only the very last line was objectionable, I agreed and took care of it. I assumed (wrongly, obviously) that @johnpowell would appreciate the same action on his answer, rather than having the whole thing removed. So, again, I removed only the last line, which was the only objectionable part of his answer, and restored the rest of his answer.
Now, where this well-intended action gets messed up is that I should have asked @johnpowell if he wanted me to do that, or at the very least notified him that I had done it. I apologize whole-heartedly for dropping the ball on this!
I hope he’ll forgive me, and will come back.
