What are some "old-style" names like Hugh or Barron ?

Asked by partyrock (3870points) February 15th, 2012

What are some older names like Fred, Hugh, Barron, Vivien, etc ??

I’m looking for Victorian-era names, or names that were more common in the 1920’s, 1930’s, 1950’s,etc, thanks

It’s becoming fashion again to name a child for a mother’s surname (or historical surname).

Most of my family surnames are ugly, so I wouldn’t do it, but there are lots of Hamiltons, MacKenzie’s, etc.

For a girl, I love the old floral names. Rose, Jasmine, Fern, Lily.

@partyrock I love to wander through an old cemetery and read the names. They also tell a lot of stories too.

Thinking through my family tree and we had pretty boring names.

There was a Frederick and a Francesca (which I love given it doesn’t seem to fit with the 1800s).

A few Elizabeths, Nancy, Clara, Amelia.

Jewel names are oldies but goodies, also. Jewel, Ruby, Pearl, Opal…

And of course, many names were shortened or nicknames were used. My grandmother appears to have been called Annie but everyone referred to her as Nancy?

Holy shit. I bow to not one but two displays of greatness.
Not messing with the mods but those are awesome answers.

A great resource is the Social Security Administration’s register of baby names. Choose any year after 1879 and you can find the most popular names for babies born in the U.S. that year—and not just the top 10 but the top 1000. You can also check the popularity of a name over time. Fascinating. I use it often for fictional characters. I like to dig down a ways instead of picking a name near the top.

I am going to save that link @Jeruba. Thank you.

Some names need at least a couple more generations before they become cool again. Please don’t name your child: Esther, Ethyl, Herbert, Herman, Percival

I wanted to cry for some reason.

@Blueroses… my grandmother’s name was Clara Lillian and Lillian was my sister’s middle name. She hated it. I think it is a pretty name.

My great-grandma’s name was Cassie. Not short for anything, her parents just liked the sound of it. If I ever have a girl, Cassie will be one of her names.
@bellatrix I love the name Clara (especially if the “a” sounds are long, as in (American English) water

These are 19th century names that are old fashioned but I think they are up for a revival. I’m not mentioning Lily, Sophia or Olivia, just because they’ve already been revived and are the hot new names right now.

I have noticed a rise in old fashioned names in young children where I work (sports centre that runs kids clubs). Recently I have met/heard of children under 10 years old called Wilfred, Agatha, Margo, Elspeth, Margaret, Meg, Edward, Alberto, Freddie, Harriet, Grace (although I don’t think this name ever really went out of fashion), Annabel, Theodore, Giles, William, George, Hal, Beatrice, Archie, Alice, Ralph, Gabriel, Madeleine, Charles, Alfie, Helena, Helen, Oscar, Scarlett, Jeremy, Angus, Hamish, Rupert, Hugo, Arthur, Eli, Jonah, Laurence, Verity, Clara, Florence, Victoria, Ruby, Martha, Evie, Benedict, Stirling, Rosalind, Bertie…. the list goes on.

Edit: Also, my tortoise is called Agnes!
