Are phone carriers like VirginMobile any good?

I was checking their site earlier and saw that I could be paying half of what I’m paying right now with AT&T and get way more for my money. I know they don’t have a wide range of phone selections, are there any other drawbacks in using these cheap alternatives?

Here’s my story. College student, big texter, big emailer, and loving my data plan.
Paying my monthly bill is cheese! So easy. Just go to the webpage and purchase Top Up card amount. Furthermore if you are late on paying your bill, say it was due the 25 of February, you could still pay later on in life and the same service will be restored and you won’t suffer any consequences your billing date resets to appropriate the time slot as well.
I have never received a harassing call ever. Just a simple “text” that reminds you it’s near that time of the month to refill. And then if you don’t pay, and have automatic refill on, you will get a text telling you that a payment hasn’t gone through.
I have the 25 dollar plan and run an Optimus 5 phone. The trouble is it’s 300 mins and text free and data free. The only problem I can think of is if you need “call records” for a court appearance as proof of evidence it will take a bit longer to receive because you will have to go to a notary and mail that to the company as opposed to a walk in store like Sprint and etc. But other than that I have only gone over 300 mins 1 out of a year and that’s because I was “on hold” for many calls during that particular month. My YouTube speed is fine as are all other web functions. Remember though at the moment I think they are offering only 3G? You might want to double check that as newer phones have newer abilities.
I used them several years ago. I put it on “auto-refill”. It did not work well, and once you are getting low, they “Call” and harrass you. It is a recording, but still annoying. That was why I changed.
I have AT&T. I use the $.25 a minute, $.20 per text. I auto refill $25 every 90 days and it works well for me since I don’t use the phone much. I still get texts to refill but at least the refill part works!
I have been using a Motorola i335 from Boost Mobile which I bought for 50 bucks two years ago. I’ve been paying 50 bucks a month unlimited calls and texts. No Internet, no camera, no music, just an old fashioned phone for calls.
Compared to what I was paying when I had a smartphone from Sprint which was on the average, 150 bucks a month.
Not really. They may be better price-wise, but Virgin Mobile doesn’t have their own network in the US – they buy services from Sprint. SO your actual service is no better (but no worse) than Sprint’s.
The only real drawback is that these virtual carriers are at the mercy of the major networks they piggyback on. Virgin is powered by Sprint’s network, so your network is only as good as Sprint’s and Sprint will discriminate and put their own customers first before Virgin’s in terms of data and network strength. If their network is overloaded and they need to drop calls, you’ll be first in line.
But otherwise, i’ve never heard anything but good things about them. Their phones are low end because they can’t subsidize them because of no contracts, but at least they’ve got decent android devices now instead of old kyoceras.
I use Virgin Mobile and really like it.
I’m actually thinking about changing to Virgin Mobile myself. From what I’ve heard, it’s service is pretty good.
