If you have read the "Dexter" series of books and watched the television series on Showtime, how do you think that they compare?

Do you have a preference? If so, do you prefer the books or the television show? Is there any correlation between the stories? (For example, Dexter getting married and Rita having a baby, Cody & Astor wanting to head down the “dark” path, the Kyle & Deb story line, etc.)
I’m considering buying the television series and would like your opinions.

I didn’t even know there were books! I know I’m addicted to the show. I am going to follow your question to see what those who have experienced both think. :-)
@Judi – I love the books and know a couple of people who, like you, didn’t know they existed. Of the things that I mentioned up there in parentheses, do any of them sound familiar?
Dexter and Rita got married and had a baby. I watch it on itunes so I’m waiting until spring for the curent eason to come out. I’m afraid to say to much in case it’s different. Cody and Astor are still kids as of my last viewing.
I haven’t read the books, but I’ve watched the series twice. Cody and Aster don’t look likely to become “dark” characters – but there’s still plenty of time for that. Dexter only worries about Harrison, his son with Rita, becoming a monster like him. The Kyle/Deb storyline is absent – Deb has had several lovers, but the love of her life is an FBI detective who tracks down serial killers. I’ll say no more. Do you want spoilers? I am guessing you don’t.
You should check out the series. It’ll probably piss you off in some cases, since you’re a fan of the books, but overall it’s very well done.
@dappled_leaves OMG I can’t wait for the next season. That ending of the past season (s6) I think left me on the edge of my seat! It was so intense…
I have never read the books but I know they exist, might try to read one over the summer but I doubt that I will since I’ve gotten so far into the show, plus I’m not really a person who’s into reading books and watching shows of the same name. its better to watch plus its faster haha
Many thanks to everyone! I’m often the opposite of you, @nailpolishfanatic , I’d rather read the book because then I know what was originally meant by the creator. Unfortunately, this means I spend time annoyed by movies and TV series!
@tedibear , you need a paradigm shift. You need to see the film as a new creation. Sort of like interpretive art.
