So, what's with Pinterest? Should I?

I received an invitation to view, and so created an account. Do you use it? Do you enjoy it? What’s the best way to use it? Is it just another time-suck, or is there some useful function?

I use it a little. I think it’s a time suck, but it’s fun for a while, then the novelty wore off for me. YMMV.
I don’t use it, since it’s still on an invitation basis, but I do use sorta similar websites like Instapaper and those are incredibly useful if you want to clip things that you want to remind yourself of or share with others. For example, I would use it whenever I browsed cooking websites and clip recipes i want to try or like. You can treat it like a mini scrapbook. My girlfriend is using it for saving up ideas for our wedding. It can be a timesuck if you obsessive browse popular clips, but it doesn’t have to be.
That site is an anomaly in social networking sites. It’s become extremely popular even though it’s invite only, and it’s attracting regular users much more than tech savvy early adopters, and a majority of the user base (80+%) are women. I’d give it a shot, but being male kinda makes me feel like a fish out of water there.
@GoldieAV16 “YMMV?” Your Mind Moves Volvos? :D
Meh, I’ve been on Pinterest and “pinned” a few things, I just find it difficult to be interested enough to go back now. But when I do log back in, I find myself looking at all manner of things until I realize I’ve just spent two hours getting closer to an internet coma, LOL.
Have thought about it but don’t need another internet time-suck.
I love Pinterest. I use it for shopping lists, wedding planning, gift ideas, recipes… it’s fun.
Pinterest seems like the female version of Reddit. It’s just a website to waste time and submit/view pretty much anything. It’s easy to get lost, so watch out.
My cousin recommends it. I’ve been on it, but it hasn’t enamored me. However, if ever I have an oddly specific want, I check it, and Etsy, in case it’s there.
I just started using it, and for me it’s just a way to keep track of things I like. Books I want to read, recipes I want to try, and art/craft/decorating ideas. What’s kind of throwing me off is that people ‘follow’ me. I really don’t want it to be another social thing, just a collecting thing. I don’t know if I’m kind of obligated to follow my friends, or what.
I was using it a couple days ago to find pictures for my trend research. I was looking for rainbow related pictures. So I have started to like it as I think it is easier to search by themes than Flickr is but I still need to find out more about it. Like, what is this whole needing to be invited thing about??
I recently read that Pinterest has become one of the top 10 websites in the US. Whether that means top 10 of the total sites or top 10 of the social networking sites, I’m not sure. I find Pinterest is good when I want to kill some time. I can take ½ hour just to scroll down the main page. I actually like it better when I’m not signed in, and I get to see a bigger variety of random stuff. I think the downloading the pin thing is stupid – I think they should just make “pin” = “like.” To have “pin” and “like” be two separate things, to me, is cumbersome. I think the pin itself shouldn’t be something you have to download. I hope they make that a bit easier to use in future updates.
I like getting unusual ideas for parties and fun foods from it. I like looking at random stuff like hair styles, house decor, organizational ideas, party ideas, travel spots. It’s definitely a time killer, but it’s fun.
Depends on what you want to use it for. I haven’t been sucked in thus far. I would really only use something like this to keep track of things that I want, so I tend to find the other aspects of the site to be unnecessary and a bit annoying.
I would recommend using Want Worthy instead if you’re looking for a site to keep track of things you like or want. It claims to be a “universal fashion wish list” but it really works for anything. You just download it to your browser’s toolbar, and click the link anytime you like or want something; it automatically saves the picture, link, price, and item information to a list. It’s very simple and has no social networking or other obnoxious/complicated aspects to it whatsoever.
I will occasionally browse Pinterest or use it to look for something, but you don’t need to be a member to do any of that.
It’s just a social sharing site with a bent towards arts, crafts, cooking, and similar whatnot.
Its form factor reminds me a lot of Tumblr and the interactions there.
The best “time sucks” usually capture you because of their specific application to your life and interests. If you’re a crafty, do-it-yourself kind of person who likes sharing ideas, then Pinterest is probably worth checking out.
I would like an invitation. I would like to see if I get any use out of it. Just cause.
Anyone who wants an invite, shoot me your email address in a PM, and I’ll invite you. :)
@augustlan: When I joined, I think I requested the invite from the founders or whoever is in charge of it, on the site directly.
Yeah, I think that’s how I got in, too. Now that I’m there, though, it allows me to invite people, too.
You can just join with no invite if you link it to your facebook. I don’t have the slightest idea what to do with it, but I have it.
Grrrr. I hate you all. I can’t stop fiddling with the damn thing. Sorry to everyone who has me on their feed. Yes, I am the cause for all of those pictures of fairy tale moons and board games that suddenly clogged up your feed.
Aww thanks. I wasn’t fishing (well maybe a little) but I was really concerned that perhaps I was clogging feeds. I used a homeade “pinterest” for years (A word doc full of tons of links on a theme) and I decided that pinterest was a perfect place to put those links I’ve been collecting since forever. But I was worried it was too much. So good to know it was not!
Never too much! I spent waaaay too much time on there last night.
