I am looking for some decent sunglasses for when I go running. Recommendations?

Asked by Mama_Cakes (11162points) February 20th, 2012

Something stylish, lightweight and that will fit securely on the bridge of my nose and not slide off.

Brand recommendations? Thanks.

I use Ray Ban Wayfarers. Nice & big. I don’t have to look like Riddick on a mission, and they are low maintenance. The Italians got this one right. Plus there are similar styles of Wayfarers but different sizes. For a quality glass lens, I recommend them because, well they’re glasses, not plastics.

I know very little about them, but I know they make tinted contact lenses that are relatively affordable.

@tedd The thing with that is, what if you’re in the office? Or just a non bright spot like a running trail, wouldn’t the eyes perceive the depths of light outside as bright thus the same cycle of brightness being absorbed on a meter of 1–10 (1 being the lowest) being equivalent to having non tinted contacts?

Or do you only pop them on for running? I’ve just always wondered that.

I have owned and used Oakley’s for many years.
Pricey, but performant and they stand behind them.

For running, RayBan is the leader. Be sure to buy some sunglasses ties? to go with them in order to hold the glasses on your face, when you sweat.

The SunGlass Hut has a great variety of quality sunglasses.

I agree with @blueiiznh Oakley is the way to go if you have the bucks. I’ve worn them since the late 1980’s. Lately I’ve gotten cheap and use about anything that wont bounce around when I’m jogging.Check out these wicked sports Oakley’s

As @gondwanalon confirmed, I will pile on th Oakley wagon. I have a pair for cycling, a pair of beach volleyball, a pair for running.

As @john65pennington has said I’ll jump on the RayBan wagon. I have a pair of RayBans for running, cycling, driving and walking around town. All in one :D

I wear a visor instead. It keeps the sun off your face so you don’t burn, and is way cheaper than fancy sunglasses.

@nikipedia Not everyone is cool enough to wear visors, some like to run and look at the floor with bright sunlight. So sunglasses do work.

I’ve owned all of these brands, and I highly recommend each. Yeah, the are a bit pricey. I’ve lost many a pair of cheap sunglasses, I’ve never lost an expensive pair.

Smith Optics. (Nice lenses, Good all-around sunglasses) Around $100
Native Eyewear (More versatile than Smith. Pairs often come with multiple colored lenses, probably your best choice for the buck) Around $100.
Maui Jim (the absolute best optics. You’ll put them on and say “whoa”) $200+

I am not a great fan of any particular brand but I think whatever brand you purchase should have nose pads instead of just the molded plastic nosepiece. The nose pads cushion your nose and keep the glasses from sliding down. I have to have nice soft nosepads! The other important part is that they curve around and fit tightly against your face. If they don’t sun will come in the sides, that is not good for your eyes. My husband has developed Pterygium and the eye docs say it is because he didn’t wear sunnies!
