Meta Question

Can we please place "Social" first?

Asked by CaptainHarley (22452points) February 20th, 2012

In the list “General” “Social” and “Meta,” General is listed first. I honestly think it would result in fewer moderated answers if Social was placed first.

I don’t think that’s likely to happen. The main (and original) purpose of the site is to get helpful answers to questions. The social aspect of the site was an unintended outgrowth of that.

AshLeigh's avatar

I thought it was a good idea.

The last time I had an “unintended outgrowth” they gave me an ointment.

digitalimpression's avatar

My bookmark for this site has the social tab clicked.

Lightlyseared's avatar

Can we at least get rid federated? It’s a nice idea but lets face it it hasn’t takne off.

Lightlyseared's avatar

@digitalimpression Next to social is the federated tab but there hasn’t been a new question posted there in over a year.

The original purpose of the site could have been to sell doilies. Just because Social is the most popular, that’s no reason to put it first. After all, we’re here to sell doilies.

How many doilies did you sell last year.

We had a record year: thirty two.

How many socials did you sell?

Oh, I don’t know, we stopped counting after around one hundred thousand.

Is the market speaking? Oh no! Not the marketplace of ideas! It has no ideas!

fluthernism in action.

digitalimpression's avatar

@Lightlyseared Oh. I don’t have one of those.

I think you should be able to configure what you see first in your options. The default should be General, but you could set it to whatever you wanted—even Meta. If I could set my preference options, every time I’d log in, I’d see Social/Active first.

I’d also like a pony and a magic wand that makes ice cream. So hop to it, devs!

digitalimpression's avatar

@keobooks Didn’t even think of that option. That would be awesome!

ucme's avatar

Last time I had an “unintended outgrowth” the wife slapped me across the face.
We were at the beach &.......well, you know.

wundayatta's avatar

@ucme Methinks “the wife” needs to dial back on the violence quotient. I’m sure you had things well in hand.

ucme's avatar

@wundayatta That’s women for you, look but don’t touch is the usual rule, but any sign of a boner & kerpoww!!

Answerbag used to have something much like Fluther’s federated feature. Answerbag called it a “widget.” I put it on my site, then Answerbag did away with it during the “upgrade.”

WillWorkForChocolate's avatar

I think we should place “NSFW” first. So there. :P

augustlan's avatar

I love your idea @keobooks. Since we’re not working on new things much at the moment, I wouldn’t expect it to happen any time soon, though. :(

@Lightlyseared @digitalimpression “Federated” was only in the beta stage when we put it on hold. Only beta tester members can see it. It would be nice to have it removed, at least for now.

keobooks's avatar

@augustlan—But I should expect the pony and magic wand in the mail any day now, right?

augustlan's avatar

But of course! ~

CaptainHarley's avatar

@keobooks

I think that’s an excellent idea! When you first sign on to Fluther, give you the options and explain them to you and allow you to set Fluther up to your own preferences, then allow you to change it later on if you decide to do it differently. We could call it “YOUR Fluther!” : D

AshLeigh's avatar

My Fluther, eh… I like the sound of that. :D

CaptainHarley's avatar

@AshLeigh

Thank you. Once in a great while I come up with a good one. : )

Does it really matter in which order the headings are? You don’t have to use them in order. You may choose which ever you wish and ignore the others, if you please. I don’t get it. In my experience, my question was moved to a heading is if it was deemed to be in the wrong place.

CaptainHarley's avatar

@Sunny2

General is the default. You have to stop and think to change it to either of the other two before posting.

Sunny2's avatar

So? I have no problem with stopping 2 seconds to think. I decide where to go really quickly.

CaptainHarley's avatar

It’s not a matter of “deciding quickly.” When I start the process, I’m already constructing my post in my mind. I have to tear my mind away from building the post, think about where I want the post to go, then try to re-engage on the post itself again. It’s no biggie, just annoying.

Sunny2's avatar

@CaptainHarley Sir, you are experiencing the aging process. Relax. You’ll live 5 days longer.

CaptainHarley's avatar

[ smacks Sunny2 upside da hed!] Hush!

Sunny2's avatar

@CaptainHarley It’s no secret!

jonsblond's avatar

I bet those of you who are irritated because you have to take an extra second to click on the right section are also tailgaters, aren’t ya?! impatient fluckers you are! ;)

CaptainHarley's avatar

LMAO! YOU hush too! : P

AshLeigh's avatar

<—Tailgater.

CaptainHarley's avatar

Hahahaha! [ slams on brakes! ] : P

wundayatta's avatar

Oh dear me, no. This is not about impatience. It’s about customer service. It’s about loving customers and trying to make things easiest for people to use your service. If I ran this site I would be thrilled with this idea. I would do a quick analysis to see how many questions are put in each section and I would put the number one category as the default category. That’s just good manners.

marinelife's avatar

I agree with @augustlan that General is the best representation of the site’s original purpose.

CaptainHarley's avatar

@marinelife

Screw the site’s “original purpose!” Fluther has undergone a sea change and its members have spoken loudly and clearly: this is a social website! On the Internet, one either adapts to changing circumstances or one disappears from sight.

HungryGuy's avatar

@CaptainHarley”...or one disappears from sight…” Like what happened last night???? :-p

marinelife's avatar

@CaptainHarley Are you telling me to get out? I don’t agree with you. The members have not spoken. A few malcontents have spoken.

CaptainHarley's avatar

LMAO!

No, I would never tell anyone to get out. I might leave myself if things got too heated, but it’s not my place to make anyone else leave.

HungryGuy's avatar

@CaptainHarley – The night before you posted that answer, Fluther totally crapped out. Big honking 404….DOA….AWOL….fell off the face of the earth…

CaptainHarley's avatar

@HungryGuy

I didn’t know that. I remember not being able to logon to Fluther for awhile, but didn’t realize it was a “total crap out.”
