Women's slips? Do we wear them anymore? Or is it outdated?

I like a nice dress or skirt, but I haven’t worn a slip in years. I think they can be quite alluring. It seems sheer is more appropriate these days. What do you think?

I’d wear em if I could find the dern things. Slips may have disappeared, but static cling hasn’t.
I haven’t worn one in 20 years.
I have one… I use it with certain skirts. I still have this annoying voice in my head that says, “You shouldn’t be able to see through your skirt.”
@fundevogel You could probably find them at the Bali-Hanes outlets dotting the country.
I haven’t worn one in more than 20 years either (like @syz).
I have many slips of different lengths, styles and colors. Although, I don’t wear a dress or skirt very often, I always wear a slip when I do.
I don’t feel like I’m properly dressed unless I wear a slip. The fabrics of outer clothes sometimes bother me, and I like the way my skirts fall, and hang with a slip.
Why don’t women wear slips any more? Do you not wear dresses or skirts? Or do you just wear them without a slip?
I have three of my mother’s most beautiful slips in the bottom of my lingerie drawer. I love the look and feel of them. I don’t wear skirts or dresses very often either, but if I do, I put on a slip. It feels soft and cool against my body. I have a few nice skirts with built in slips. But I think they days of women wearing slips are a by-gone era.
I saw a young woman dressed for work the other day. She looked so professional and put together. A-line skirt, silk blouse tucked-in, heels, hosiery, and just the hint of a slip peaking out from under the tiny slit as she walked across the street. My husband said, “Why is that so sexy?”
My mother wore them, but that was when she was just a slip of a gir…...yes I know, groan away.
In German, slip means panties, so I am shocked to learn that some here have not worn any for 20 years.
One of my fetishes is for a woman in a slip. Sadly it just ain’t that common any more.
If the fabric of a skirt or dress is thin, then yes. I have a collection of slips acquired over many years—they are different lengths and colors so that I’m prepared for any thin-fabriced-skirt situation. And for the many changes in the size of my waistline.
One of the last times I wore a slip I was working at an apartment complex about 20 years ago. I was walking along the back of the property when my slip subbenly fell to my ankles! I quickly swooped it up with my foot and hustled to the dumpster. I often wonder if anyone saw me?
Oh my.. I’m so surprised to see people saying they don’t wear slips!
I almost never wear a skirt without wearing a slip! Does this make me old fashioned?
I agree with everything @wilma says. If I wear a skirt, I am certainly wearing a slip. I have many different kinds – various lengths, colors and styles.
If a skirt has a lining, I won’t wear one. However, if a skirt does not have a lining, and you’re wearing tights or pantyhose under it, then static cling is not appealing in any way, shape or form.
I love gypsy skirts and sundress and most have built in slips these days. I do have a few vintage slips I wear as lingerie/ summer nighties. I like full slips, and especially vintage silk and satin with lace. Otherwise, no, never, I also don’t iron, under any circumstance. lol
When my sister and I cleaned out my mother’s apartment after her death in late May, we found dozens of them, probably dating from 1965. (That’s probably the last time I wore one.
We included them in the huge pile we gave to the Salvation Army.
I wonder, what part of the country are you folks that still wear slips from? I’m betting it’s somewhere east of the Mississippi, or at least the Rockies.
If I ever wear a dress again, I will probably wear a slip.
(And I’m still surprised every time I learn that @fundevogel is a female!)
@Judi I’m in the northern Midwest.
So why don’t most women wear a slip now? What changed that made you stop wearing one if you used to wear one?
Silk, satin, smooth, soft, lacy pretty, what’s not to like about a slip?
I think it really depends on the style and fabric of the dress and how much cling you are comfortable with.
I’ll guarantee you that some women do. Wanna bet that QE II doesn’t?
On the rare occasions when I wear a dress or skirt, I sure do wear a half slip, both for comfort and for appearance.
While I had a cast on my leg, and then one on my arm, I wore fullish mid-calf-length skirts because jeans were impossible. With those I wore pettipants, which are still available here along with a lot of other products you might have thought had disappeared.
@Jeruba I also have pettipants that I wear sometimes.
I love Vermont Country Store. I also wear one of those cotton nightgowns around the house in the summer. That’s what I wear when “it’s too hot to wear real clothes.”
I don’t usually wear one, because I wear jean skirts almost every day. Don’t see why I would wear a slip with a jean skirt… But I do wear them when I wear a less casual skirt.
I have a few slips but I rarely wear them as most of my skirts come with built in linings. I still do a sunshine check on my thinner fabric skirts just to make sure. I’m glad I do as there is one skirt I recently bought that really does need a slip.
I haven’t worn a slip since I was a little girl. I’m all about comfort, and to me, comfort does not mean having to wear more than one layer. I just don’t buy dresses/skirts that seem to require a slip.
On those rare occasion when I wear a skirt or dress, I always wear a slip. I haven’t bought one in a few years so I don’t know how readily available they are in stores. I am not a fan of see through plus slips keep the outer garment from riding up, of course I am not a fan of the skin tight garments that don’t have room for a slip between them and the skin of the wearer. :-)
It looks like this might be one of those generational things. Do younger women consider them old fashioned?
<—- Doesn’t consider them old fashioned.
I’ve worn them all my life…
I wear a slip with the dress that is required for my community choir. Once we’re on the stage with the bright lights, it doesn’t pass the “sunshine test” mentioned by @tranquilsea. That’s the only thing I wear a slip with. Other things are either lined or thick enough that they’re unnecessary.
I don’t just wear a slip with dresses that might otherwise be too see-through. I wear a slip with nearly all dresses and skirts. Usually the dress hangs better with a slip. It slides more easily around my body and looks smoother.
Anyone remember the hue and cry that happened when Princess Diana was photographed before she married Prince Charles while she worked at the pre-school? She should have done the sunshine test.
I remember that “scandal,” @tranquilsea. lol I love that photograph. She was so young and innocent. Beautiful.
For women who generally go commando (without panties), I feel that wearing a slip with a skirt or dress is still advised. TMI is not classy!
I love the feel of a slip under my dress. I wear non-traditional slips such as lingerie (spaghetti strap, short, silky nightgowns for example). I like to match them to the dress.
