Do you think your memory of what it tastes like is accurate?
Have you ever eaten something after a ten year hiatus? How did it compare to your memory of how it tasted?
Just thinking about memory in relation to our sense of taste. (Versus sight, sound, smell or touch.)

I say “Twinkie”.
I’m sure my memory is faulty, as I remember them to be yummy.
My wife just said “Pickled Tongue”
She said she used to love it, but now the thought of it makes her throw up a little.
Brussels sprouts, lima beans, cauliflower, cooked spinach. Other vegetables like broccoli and cabbage can only be eaten if they are cooked into something that masks the flavor, like chinese food. Whatever my mother did to vegetables when I was a child, it soured me on them forever. I can’t eat them at all; even the smell of them makes me literally gag until I almost throw up.
I’ve tried them all again, now that I’m older, and the taste hasn’t changed at all to me.
I haven’t eaten meat in 20 years. But so much of taste is aroma, and I do smell meat often enough in various venues that I think my memory of bacon and BBQ and fried chicken, etc. is still pretty accurate. Not much chance of verifying that, though.
I have no idea, probably nothing, but it has been awhile since I’ve eaten a hostess cake food.
@thorninmud That’s interesting. The idea of your sense of smell keeping your sense of taste up to date. You should do an experiment with that—with something other than meat, that is.
Radishes. I haven’t eaten a radish in 2 decades. I don’t remember much about their taste except that they taste like pure evil.
Liver.
More then thirty years ago and probably sixty more years before I will even think about trying to take a nibble again.
Lobster. I love it, but I haven’t had it. I still remember what it tastes like.
@WillWorkForChocolate I’m so sorry. I love vegetables, and I would miss them horribly if I couldn’t eat them.
Only the things that I loved that have completely disappeared, like Green Goddess salad dressing, Club cheese, caraway jack cheese. Infact I am in process of searching out some cheeses that seem to have become obsolete.
KFC Chicken
I saw a program on how they treat their chickens. After that, no KFC. It’s been around 15 years since I’ve had any.
I can still “taste” the seasoning.
Fast food hamburger. Last one was in the park across from MacDonalds.
1. Anything from McDonalds.
2. Roast Leg of Lamb
3. KFC
4. Liver
Hah! You guys inspired me and I just ordered $60 worth of gourmet cheeses from a coastal cheese factory in my state.
3 Caraway Jacks, a garden jack, a sharp cheddar & a salami cheddar. Let the wine and cheese party begin! :-D
Does Big League Chew count?
@Mama_Cakes
I heard stuff that’s almost horror movie like and most likely bullshit but… I was told they have the ’‘KFC Laboratories’’...where they breed chickens without beaks or feet or anything…it’s just like this living chunk of chicken.
That sounds pretty far fetched, but I’m pretty sure it’s based on plausible facts, that are equally as scary. I don’t know if you can actually genetically alter a chicken this way, but that freaks me out and it stayed in my head ever since I first heard it.
Also, I haven’t had Funfruits for ever. I loved those as a kid. I’ve eaten Fruit Rollup though, which is probably made of the same crap, but I’m pretty sure that was more than ten years ago, too.
Weetabix. A cereal that my mum fed to me and my little sister every single day for two years when I was a toddler. She used to mix it with boiled egg yolk… (shudder).
Unfortunatley I still remember how it used to taste and smell. Fortunatley I can say I haven’t eaten it in over fourteen years and will never do so again.
@Symbeline I remember fruit rollup! And fruit by the foot! (Fruit, my foot!)
I haven’t eaten any meat, fish or fowl for over 25 years.
In my mind’s eye (or I guess tongue) in this case, I can clearly recall the taste of pastrami, turkey, tuna fish sandwiches, chicken fajitas, carnitas and pulled pork sandwiches. Because of this ability to remember the taste so vividly, I don’t crave these items, and the scent alone is enough for me, like when I go to the fair and smell that combination of barbecue/pizza/roasted corn scent.
There’s only a handful of things that I can think of (other than meat) that I haven’t eaten for that long of a time, but I am thinking of Straw Hat Pizza, Adam’s Sour Strawberry gum, those huge Charms lollipops, Raspberry Zingers and Sugar Babies candy. Oh, and this fantabulous baked macaroni and cheese that they used to serve at one of our long defunct cafeterias. God, that was heaven on a plate!
@KatawaGrey LOL, I’ve got radishes in my fridge as we speak. I’m going to pickle them. They’re round, white Korean radishes that look like golf balls. Radish is one of my favorite taste sensations.
@WillWorkForChocolate The vegetables that you do not like are my staples : ) I was lucky, I was never forced to eat anything when I was a kid. Didn’t like much of anything when I was a kid, either. I was very picky then, but when I hit about 20, I just started trying things. New foods, new preparations of old foods, then a few years later, I became a vegetarian and my range of different foods that I eat increased about 3 fold.
@Kardamom I love those hot, spicey ice cicle radishes, my local oragnic store has them listed as a ” customer requested” item.
@MilkyWay Weetabix, Oh man I remember those. I found them awkward to eat. It’s like…a giant mutant cereal.
@Michael_Huntington Hey Fruit by the Foot rings a bell…weren’t those similar to Fruit Rollup?
Yeah it was like fruit rollup, but it was in one long strip instead of sheets.
Oooh, apricot fruit rolls…oooh.
@Michael_Huntington Oh yeah, and the wrapping it was stuck to had cartoons and comics and shit on it sometimes, if I recall.
I just thought of something else I haven’t had in ten years, and now I’m craving one, a Fudgesicle!
@Kardamom: Mmmmm…Good Humor Ice Cream!!
But I prefer either the Chocolate Eclair or the Drumstick.
ice cream truck – where are you?
Oh man, I bought a giant batch of creme puffs from my local bakery www.sierrarizing.com at Xmas…sublime they were. I’m still working them off. lol
I gave up doughnuts over a decade ago. It’s a sad life.
I’m sure they taste like heaven. A nice jelly filled number. an apple fritter…...sigh
I adore a nice Green Goddess dressing. @coloma
Pastrami, pepperoni, hamburger, hot dogs, and salami. I was still enjoying their taste when I last had any, but I don’t miss them at all.
Pork rinds. I stopped eating them the minute I realized what they really were- I was about 9 or 10 years old. I am so grossed out by the fact I even ate them to begin with.
Yes, donuts, I haven’t had a donut in decades, but I remember, oh I remember. :-)
Liver. And I never will again. Yuck. My grown children have never tasted it either as I refused to force it on them like my mom did on me.
Those big pretzel sticks about 7 inches long with a circumference of about ½ inch. We used to pretend they were cigars and ate them down slowly. They were good dipped in yellow mustard. I just outgrew them. And for those of you whose minds seem to jump to conclusions, “Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.”
Macaroni and cheese from the box, canned green beans, fish sticks. Ugh, I’m so glad I don’t have to eat this stuff anymore.
@Coloma The only time I’ve seen Green Goddess dressing is a brand called Annie’s that they carry in Whole Foods. That stuff is delicious!
I moved to Australia almost 15 years ago. The food I miss is a real hot dog, I didn’t like them when I lived in the USA but now I want one. Aussie hotdogs don’t even look like real food. Tasty Kakes, wow do I miss them, good pretzels, the real hard ones. There are a lot of things. I don’t think of them until someone mentions them and then I think omg, I would kill for one of those!
Cabbage, it tastes like shit, hence the hiatus.
Fried liver. I haven’t had it since I was a kid. I used to like it and I keep getting tempted to buy some but no-one else in the house likes it, I’m a terrible cook and reslly don’t have much of an idea how to prepare it.
@Haleth You are right, Annie’s does make a delicious bottled green goddess dressing!
If anyone wants to make their own homemade green goddess, here’s the Classic Recipe (which I didn’t realize until this moment had anchovies in it)
Here is a vegetarian version of one woman’s multiple and ultimately successful attempts at re-creating Annie’s green goddess dressing. Enjoy
Beets. I remember beets being delicious, but I have no idea how to prepare them, and the canned beets at the market look kind of scary.
Also, my father’s salad dressing. It’s been about 18 years. And honestly, I don’t remember at all what it tastes like, but I remember demanding it by the gallon as a kid.
@Seek_Kolinahr – I’m sure there are many ways to prepare beets, but I just throw them in a pot and boil until soft. When they are cool, peel and cut, add some vinegar, salt, pepper, garlic salt and chillies. They truly are so much better than the canned ones.
Hot dogs!
My fourth grade teacher showed us how they were made
and I never ate another one in my life. aha.
I used to love the “snapping” red ones which I realize they don’t have everywhere in the world.
@Seek_Kolinahr Canned beets are mushy and pickled and icky. But beets, in general are really wonderful.
One of the best ways to eat them is in Borscht
Or this Raw Kale Salad with Root Vegetables Use beets as one of the root veggies instead of carrots, tastes much better and more earthy. And to save time, if you don’t want to make the candied nuts, just use Trader Joe’s sweet and spicy pecans. This salad is soooooooo good.
@mattbrowne Ugh. It’s been a lifetime since I ate tripe.
@Adirondackwannabe – Is it still sold for human consumption? Or does it end up as dog food?
@mattbrowne, it is used in Menudo which is a soup. It’s served in most Mexican Resteraunts here in California.
@Brian1946 , I’m so old I only have a fant idea of who Ricky Martin is, and I didn’t know his nick name.
@Judi
I’m 65 and IIRC, I’m substantially older than you, so my familiarity with him could just be a matter of individual happenstance.
My mother made tripe and my parents and brothers ate it with delight. I never touched it, I didn’t like the way it looked. They were also fans of pickled tongue, pigs feet, hagis, mountain oysters, kidneys, liver, sweet breads. They grew up during the depression and nothing was wasted!
