What are some simple cocktails I might like?

Asked by Haleth (18947points) February 22nd, 2012

The question below made me realize I have pretty much no clue when it comes to cocktails, and it would be fun to try a few. Usually I just drink wine or beer. I want to try things that aren’t sweet and have interesting flavors… beyond that, anything goes.

Whiskey on the rocks.

Kalimotxo.
Half red wine, half cola.
It’s yuk (says I) and a waste of your rare, years old bottle of coke, but simple.

Following this thread…wanted to mix some cocktails but too lazy and discouraged by what seems to be too many things to buy…

Go classic and simple. Hendrick’s Gin and Tonic water with a slice of cucumber.

The Greyhound was mentioned in the last cocktail question and it’s one of my old standbys. You can kick it like a Fitzgerald with a Chambord Kir Royale and ease into the morning after with a Mimosa.

@fundevogel Actually, I’ve had Greyhounds before and never knew that was the name for it. That’s definitely the kind of thing I’d order again.

@missingbite Good suggestion! I like Gin and Tonics, too. When I was on vacation I tried a drink that was like a modified Gin and Tonic. They added a bit of simple syrup that was flavored with lemon and thyme. It was really good.

If you like non-sweet drinks, try a dirty martini. Stirred, not shaken. (James Bond got it wrong).

I found out this summer that I really like a good Sazerac. I am not much of a cocktail person either. Ihttp://cocktails.about.com/od/s/r/szrc_cktl.htm

When you say “simple” do you mean not many ingredients or simple-tasting?

I agree with the Hendrick’s Gin & Tonic – it’s simple (two ingredients) and has some botanicals and bitterness, not sweet at all.

The most simple-tasting drink is probably a vodka & tonic. But it has a reputation as a drink for people who don’t like drinks.

If you’re curious about learning how to do classic cocktails on your own (they’re really not that hard), may I shamelessly recommend my book “Home Bar Basics (and Not-So-Basics)”: website here
