What are some music groups/artists similar to the Avett Brothers?

Asked by likipie (1462points) February 24th, 2012

The Avett Brothers (if you don’t know) are a folk/rock/indie-ish/country band. Or as Wikipedia describes them: “having the ‘heavy sadness’ of Townes Van Zandt, the light pop concision of Buddy Holly, the tuneful jangle of the Beatles, and the raw energy of the Ramones.” I love their music and I’m wanting to extend my library in this particular genre, whatever it may be, so I’m wondering if anyone knows some bands with similar sound style. I know the Civil Wars have a very similar music type. Who else?

If you’re into massive harmonizing and ultra folk feel I’d recommend Fleet Foxes. They got a Grammy finally as well :D And then from Fleet Foxes practically every member has a solo project.

You should check out Josh Ritter. I’ll try to think of some others; I enjoy these genres, too.

Last.fm produced this list of artists based on their data (they know who likes the Avett Brothers and their listening habits).

Pandora seems to have hidden their “backstage” so I had to start a new station to see who they think is similar. Based on their music genome scheme and the work of their hoard of analysts they list: Mumford & Sons, Old Crow Medicine Show, The Wood Brothers, Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, and Band of Horses.

Mmm I love the Avett Bros :) :) Have you listened to Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros? Or Alexander Ebert?

Andrew Jackson Jihad, The Mountain Goats, Andrew Bird, Neutral Milk Hotel, and Of Monsters and Men.

They aren’t all exactly like the Avett Bros, but they are similar and absolutley amazing.
