We owe taxes this year and are making payments. Will this affect my receipt of an economic stimulus check? I can’t find any information one way or the other one the IRS site and I fear their phone support.

I’ve heard that your check goes toward your balance.
Crap.
Guess I’d better call to confirm.
I have heard mixed answers about (back taxes / child support / student loans in default) taking the stimulus check. Some say they go towards those and some say they don’t.
I wouldn’t spend or plan on spending the check until you have it in your hand.
And this was a half assed thing thrown together and they didn’t really document it very well. Nobody can find a clear answer.
OK, I just got off the phone with the IRS. If you owe taxes, the stimulus check goes towards what you owe.
So I get nothing.
UPDATE: I just got a notice in the mail saying the IRS will be sending me $1200 by the end of the week.
WTF?
I’m on a paymet plan and received a notice that I would recive a $600 check by 8/8/08.
I’m confused.
Turns out for me, the answer was a resounding “hell no” – they applied the stimulus check towards my unpaid taxes.
