Any suggestions for non-rice applications for a rice cooker?

Asked by Nullo (22028points) February 27th, 2012

I have recently come into custody of a rice-making machine. While rice is all well and good, I feel that, as a device, the thing isn’t living up to its full potential.
I have already turned up a recipe for bread. Anyone have other ideas?

What brand is the rice cooker because different ones do different things, I have the zojirushi and I can add other things along with the rice and it has a setting to cook basically what turns out to be a yummy rice meal

You can steam all sorts of vegetables in them and you can also use them to keep soup warm, like if you are serving soup at a party or holiday gathering.

My wife sometimes makes Oatmeal in hers.

I know! How exciting!

Other uses for your rice cooker

A family member of ours uses her rice cooker to make all “sticky” bar desserts (rice crispy treats-etc). She melts the ingredients in it, and says it’s much easier to clean.

Roger Ebert has a lot to say about this.

I use my rice cooker for steaming vegetables.

Just about anything you can do with a crock pot can be done in a rice cooker.

@SpatzieLover – Thank you so much for that website. I love risotto but I hate making it, so I will give that a try. It also looks diverse enough that I could make multiple crock pot style meals without actually owning more than one crock pot.
