What is an/a few excellent websites to create your own?

Asked by JonnyCeltics (2721points) March 2nd, 2012

I know of many—Tumblr, Wordpress, etc. I am looking for one that is adaptable and doesn’t look like it’s hosted by either. It’s for my professional use.

Google Blogger is really good, you can make very progessional looking sites quickly, such as this one I put together in 20 minutes, or this one.

I second blogger and also weebly.com. They’re both free to use.

I second virb.com.

$10/month, great site building tools, easy to use, modern-looking editable themes, great customer service.

If it’s for professional use (or in other words making money off of it) you want your own url (web address), otherwise you’re building up someone else’s site. I highly recommend that you read this article (link below, there are also a few other similar helpful articles on that site), it talks about everything you need to know about running a professional blog. He recommends using wordpress (http://wordpress.org/), but if you read some more of his articles he also recommends using a program called “site build it” which can handle all the technical aspects for you (which is a shortcut whether you know how to do it or not). I personally haven’t tried site build it yet, but I plan to in the near future.

What are you using the site for?

For example is it a store? A brochure? A blog so you can update your customers? A way for folks to locate you?

There are a lot of good tools, but they’re each good at different things. Think of it like selecting a vehicle. A pickup truck is great at hauling plywood, but wouldn’t be a good fit for a realtor to drive their clients around to prospective homes in.
