Why is my hermit crab out of its shell?

I woke up this morning, and my hermit crab was out of his shell. I went to school, just thinking he may be picking a new one. When I got home from school, he is still out. What do I do? I don’t want him to die.

How many shells do you have for him to choose? How high is the temperature & humidity in his habitat?
He won’t die unless something else, like another crab, attacks him. Maybe he can’t find a new shell that’s a good size?
Oh I’m sure it’s fine. Just needs a bigger shell.
He has three shells (including his old one) to choose from. Two of them are bigger than the one he just abandoned. Are you sure he will be OK?
Who else lives in the tank? You may want to segregate him from any aggressive critters, especially other crabs, until he’s done shopping.
There is no other guests. He ate the friend I bought for him two months ago, sadly.
Take a look at this on what makes for a good hermit shell.
You will need to mist him regularly. Again, what is the temperature & humidity. Are you sure he’s comfortable? Are the shells free of debris? Has anything changed in his habitat that is making him uncomfortable?
Ideally, you will mist him, then you will allow him to be in a darker area (move or set cardboard around his home so he has some privacy). He may be wary of trying a new shell out with anyone looking at him.
Nothing has changed. In the year that I have had him, everything has been constant including temperature, humidity, etc.
Not so much a ‘hermit’ crab now, is he? Perhaps a new name, like Nudie, the Nudist-naturalist crab.
Make sure he doesn’t dry out and perhaps give him more shells to choose from. How many shoes do you try on at the shoe store before you find a pair? Perhaps start with that number.

Has he picked a new shell yet @pshizzle? Any update?
To everyone who responded, thank you for your help. My sweet crab friend was laid to rest on the night I posted the question.
