Would you let someone else control your body if it was the only way to stay alive?

Asked by wundayatta (58741points) March 5th, 2012

Apologies to hungryguy, whose question inspired this.

So let’s say you are innocent, but are about to be put to death. You can stay alive if you agree to become a cyborg. Your body will be controlled by someone else, but you will still be alive inside it. Perhaps you will be allowed to spend some time in control of your mouth or eyes, or even fingers, on occasion, when your body isn’t being used by your owner.

What do you think you would do in this situation? How would you think this through? What considerations would you make? Is it worth giving up control of your body to stay alive? Why or why not?

[NSFW] Actually my quip is based on my story: Femborg.

No, never. I wouldn’t be able to live how I want, I won’t be able to say what I want, do what I want, meet the people I want, love people, eat, go where I want. In short, I will spend each day in torture. I will be alive but not living.

@wundayatta ignoring the position that many hold that nobody is in control of their own body (i.e. free will is an illusion), I would probably definitely rather die.

My brain controls my body, not someone else.

No, thanks, just make my funeral arrangements as I say goodbye.

Depends on how extreme you want to go in the definitions. I am signed up as an organ donor, hopefully when I die parts of me will live on under the control of others.

No, thanks. There are some things worse than death.

That story gave me chills about how Yeony became a robot controlled by the guy but was still alive. It would be a hard choice. If I committed such a terrible crime as she did in the story, I might say I deserved it. I might choose it over death. I don’t think I can say unless I was in that situation.

I’m fine with the organ donor scenario (and have signed up to donate organs myself), though I have to say, i’d be weird too to continue to have consciousness with the organs in different places.

However, if someone was taking control over my whole body.. hmm.
I think it would have to depend who that person was, and the extent I would trust them with it.
It is kind of weird to be in the passenger seat, and it would be very very hard to be in the passenger seat of someone who was going to abuse my body or use it to do nasty things.
Just a thought flipped through my mind… in a way, that’s probably how God feels… the universe is his body, but by giving us free will, he’s has given his creation to us and can only watch us interact and use it, for good or ill.

No way, get me out immediately!

My sentiment is the same as @lonelydragon.

That sounds horrible… I think I’d rather not stay alive.. I do not want to watch someone else control me for the rest of my life. It’d be boring.. I’d have no freedom.

Well I guess if that scenario happened to me, I might say yes, since being dead probably sucks. I might be hit with last minute panic. Like back when I didn’t do my lame ass homework.

But right now, I say a great big fuck no. My body is mine, it’s my sanctuary, my peace and my security. Whatever I do to it, it’s my own problem. I’d be really sad, afraid and depressed if I was just controlled against my will. I wouldn’t be in tune anymore. I suppose I might still have my brain, but if I wanted to experience something where escaping is the only possible way to keep your sanity, I’d kill someone and go to federal prison. I wouldn’t want someone else owning my body and doing whatever they wanted. Unless it was @HungryGuy.

No. I’d rather die.

@Symbeline – Ooooh! The fun I would have if you were my living, conscious, remote-control sex doll!

@HungryGuy I know you’d just make me do fun stuff. ^^

@Symbeline – Oh yeah! Right ;-)
