Possible reasons for washing a car late at night?

Asked by WhiteWingDove (388points) March 6th, 2012

One neighbor is a sad case. She has been to drug rehab numerous times, in the past 18 months at least 6 people have been hauled out of her house in handcuffs (parole violations, stolen cars, etc.). During the same time period at least 3 stolen vehicles her friends parked on our street were also towed away.

Randomly she or some of her friends ‘just out of jail’ (her words) will be washing (and sometimes vaccuming) either her car or ‘their’ car after dark (and sometimes at 11:30 pm). She has washed her car in the dark twice within the last 10 days. None of them have jobs, so it’s not like after dark is the only time they have to wash a car. Also, our garages are in the back, the only way I’ve seen this (or other residents) is while coming home or emptying trash.

Any idea why people would wash cars after dark?

Removal of evidence.

It’s a waste of water and they are embarrassed?

Maybe they’re night towels ;-)

I’m not a drug addict and I stayed up til 2am last night cleaning my garage after a day of yardwork and spring cleaning. I was on a roll and wanted my entire zone to be in tip top order. House, yard, garage. I cleaned shelves, vacuumed, rearranged, wiped down dusty plastic storage containers and had a grand old time.

People do what they do, when they do it. lol
It’s a waste of energy to try and guess others motives.
Maybe she had been wanting to wash her car and finally decided to just go out and do it. Do you make it a point to spy on your neighbors?

I say MYOB. :-/

Allergic to the sun. Most druggies are.

But, they apparently like a clean ride to do their business.

@Coloma: gee I guess I should have been more clear, already indicated the only way this was observed was while coming home or emptying trash, seriously other neighbors and I are not spying.
I also didn’t originally add that this neighbor has hit everybody up for money and will ask neighbors if they want to buy items that ‘her friends want to get rid of’’ sometimes it’s camping gear, other times extra boxed office supplies, TVs, etc.
Local Police have been to that residence numerous times as I already posted. They have told us they are trying to do more parole checks after the last stolen car & property were traced to friends staying with her. PD is the ones who tell us to report anything suspicious, even license numbers on any cars we don’t recognize on our small road. If they are so involved, I am concerned.

@WhiteWingDove Well, I guess all you can do is keep an eye out and keep the police informed to any suspicious behaviors, traffic, etc. Sorry ‘bout that.

@WhiteWingDove Next time you see the behavior, get it on camera. If this were happing to me in my neighborhood, I’d probably install a security camera.

I’m a night owl. I went to a gas station to vacuum my car once.

Does taking drugs affect ones ability to sleep and sense of judgment? If so, that could be a clue.

I’m betting they’re on speed, meth or something else that causes them to fidget.

Other than that, my boyfriend took his car through a car wash at 2 a.m. once. I was in the car so I kinda remember it. And that’s all I have to say about that.

The first thing that went through my mind when reading the Q is that they’re likely hopped up on cocaine or meth and all night cleaning binges are an inevitable by-product.

But addicts of any type are rarely on a regular sleep-wake schedule. That’s why most rehab programs place such emphasis on strict adherence to scheduling.

And all the extra stuff they have to sell is obviously mostly stolen and sold for a quick buck to pay for their drugs.

No small wonder the cops are keeping a close eye on their place. The neighborhood is fortunate that there haven’t been more incidents of violence which is another of the by-products of a lifestyle this dysfunctional.

You have hit someone and are washing off the blood.

I cleaned out my car last nite.

Addicts sometimes have a compulsive disorder.
