Did you know if you're born on the side of the road, that's what shows up on your birth certificate and is that ok?

Asked by Adirondackwannabe (36713points) March 10th, 2012

I had clients today that delivered their last child on the side of the road on the way to the hospital. And that’s what the birth certificate says. That cracked me up. What are your thoughts?

It would be a good story to tell your children and grandchildren. I don’t think I would care much really though. As long as I made it here safely and my mother made it through the the experience too.

@Bellatrix He’s a healthy 3 year old now.

I had never thought about that before. It makes sense though. I had a friend who went into labor at home and her husband delivered the baby in their bed. I suppose their address is on his birth certificate. I know a lot of people who were born at home, but I honestly never thought about what the birth certificate says for place of birth.

Does it actually say, “side of the road”?

Interesting. I hadn’t thought of that.
It only follows that someone who is born in a prison would have that noted.

@bkcunningham It cracked me up. It said the town, and then sr in brackets.

I think it is funny and interesting. @filmfann, I imagine that if your mother is an inmate the prison/jail would have a medical facility that would provide care during the birth. Wouldn’t you think? I can’t imagine the stigma of starting life by having “Cell Block C-25 DOC-NC” on your birth certificate.

@bkcunningham Oh man that has me LMAO. A prison address would be so bad.

What’s the official abbreviation for “moving vehicle” or “taxicab”? or does “sr” presume “in a vehicle”?

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

@Jeruba I have no idea. I never thought about it before.

Once you start, the possibilities are endless.

In a potting shed…on an airplane…in a camping tent in a state park…in a camping tent on a KOA site…in a camping tent in an unincorporated territory…in a shopping mall parking lot…in a church basement…

The same would apply for death certificates, @Jeruba. The airplane intrigued me. I looked it up. http://people.howstuffworks.com/air-birth.htm

I worked with a woman whose name was actually “Female” because she wasn’t named after her birth. She has a nickname, but has never bothered to change her name legally.

@bkcunningham, well, yes, but death can be sudden and unexpected, whereas you typically have some prior notice when it comes to a birth.

@Blackberry That is super sad.

Well usually a birth certificate tells what hospital you were born at, so I suppose it’s logical to name the place you were put to life, even if it wasn’t a hospital. Whether that’s okay or not well…that’s how it went down. I guess they need to confirm the exact location for whatever reason.

Personally though I think that’s awesome. I wish my birth certificate was that badass.

I was born at home and my birth certificate gives just the address.

I know it’s the same for death certificates. For instance if the person is in a car accident and dies at the scene, place of death will be the name of road and the location along it.

elbanditoroso's avatar

Does it say the name of the highway and if you were going northbound or southbound?

I can just see how I would explain to my son or daughter, if they had been born on the interstate.

“Hey dad, where was I born?”

“Son, you were born on I-65 North, mile marker 22”.

“See, it’s on the map”.

I see no problem with it, just don’t say you crossed the road afterward as that would be a bit fowl..
