I suppose we could include 8 tracks, cassettes and cd’s as well but there was more to work with in album cover design and implementation. So, either way, which is the most iconic and, as an aside, which is your personal favorite?

There are so many and hard to pic just one. I think Abbey Road by the Beatles has been a pretty iconic cover. Think of the millions of people who have posed for a pic at that same intersection.
Nevermind by Nirvana. Almost everyone knows the naked baby on that album cover.
Sticky Fingers Rolling Stones
White Album, Beatles
Pink Floyd Dark Side of the Moon. It’s not that impressive, but very recognizable.
This is mind searing as always. : )
There are so many, but I’ll second Sticky Fingers by the Rolling Stones.
The original print run, with the working zipper. It was designed by Andy Warhol.
runners up
Abbey Road Beatles
White Album Beatles
Sgt. Pepper Beatles
Led Zeppelin Led Zeppelin
Dark Side of the Moon Pink Floyd
Diver Down Van Halen
The Stone Roses – The Stone Roses
The White Album, Beatles
Running on Empty, Jackson Browne
Skynyrd with the fire on the cover.
Speaking as someone who is extremely unfamiliar with the types of music to which most of these suggestions belong, my vote is for Abbey Road. I looked the others up, and most of them look completely foreign to me (what can I say, I was raised on ‘90s pop and Judy Garland) My family definitely only owns one of them (Nevermind, which I purchased myself, actually), so if we determine iconic status by which image has made it through to this young person, it has to be Abbey Road.
@iphigeneia My first thought was Abbey Road but I wondered how it was viewed today by the under 30 set so, like @chyna I went with Dark Side of the Moon, a readily recognizable cover that, in my opinion, is somewhat boring but included all kinds of paraphernalia inside.
@AstroChuck great choice, the first album to list the lyrics on the cover.
@lonelydragon I’ve got the original album with the fire on it, in mint condition, and my sister wrote my name on it when I went to college. I didn’t kill her.
@rojo It was just before the plane crash. That changed things a bit.
Not in any order for me:
Beatles White Album
Beatles Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band
Beatles Revolver
Bob Dylan Blonde on Blonde
Bob Dylan Highway 61 revisited
Stones Exile on Main Street
My top five, in no particular order
Dark Side of the Moon – Pink Floyd
Sgt Peppers – Beatles
Abbey Road – Beatles
Sticky Fingers – Rolling Stones
Nevermind – Nirvana
Wow, I don’t know half of these album covers.
One of my personal favourites would be The Bends.
Personal favorite: Emerson, Lake and Palmer – Brain Salad Surgery. Great artwork, good execution with fold-out plates.
Rage Against the Machine – Rage Against the Machine -
I figured someone would beat me to this one but yes, the first one I thought of was PF DSOTM.
Honorable Mentions:
Zep Houses of the Holy (with all the little kids climbing up the rocks)
The Who, Who’s Next? with the band just having peed on the monolith
Genesis: The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway (Foxtrot is pretty good too)
Angry Samoans, Inside My Brain, with the hatchet going through the chick’s head
King Crimson In the Court of the Crimson King
