Why do people waiting to get on an elevator always stand right in the doorway?
My office is handicap accessible with an elevator. If I’m carrying a lot of work home I take the elevator down. Invariably there’s some idiot standing in the door blocking me from leaving when I get to the bottom floor. Why, if you’re waiting for the elevator, don’t you stand to the side. Just a pet peeve of mine.

Funny, this brings back a memory of where I used to work. I think the person getting off should be allowed to get off and then the people waiting should get on. There was a little lawyer that barged on the elevator every time, almost knocking people down. We called her the “elevator Nazi”.
I always stand to the side or further down the door. I mean, I usually expect people to be in the elevator, so they have to get out, before I get in. It’s not like the doors are gonna close and crush me to death. Not modern elevators anyway. I guess maybe because people are in a hurry sometimes, and they’re impatient. Maybe they’re scared that the doors are going to close too fast?
In New York City most people are so used to crowds that the are very careful to step out of the way. Usually…Sometimes in their impatience to get in the door they will not wait for the people to get off. That’s why there are constant announcements both recorded and by conductors reminding people to “please allow passengers to leave the train before boarding!”. (Of course, even in New York, we have not yet stooped to elevator announcements.)
If someone doesn’t listen to the announcement and pushes on anyways they will be corrected by the passengers themselves! Everything is usually kept very in check that way. It’s amazing actually how civilized New York can be.. People need to be considerate and in general they are. But there is always that clueless person, totally unaware of their surroundings, that will be in the way and either not know or not care. The ones that don’t care are openly obnoxious. The ones that don’t know are just plain clueless.lol.
It’s the same with trains, everyone just wants to get a seat/spot without understanding the other person just wants to get out. Yeah, it all comes down to manners I guess.
People are just afraid that the door will close before they get into the elevator. It’s stupid really, but those doors are mad. lol
sadconfusion I sort of forgot about that but it’s probably true. Is it also because everyone’s always in such a hurry? Sometimes people are impatient even when they don’t need to be in a hurry. I’ve noticed that, in fact my husband is often that way. I always tease him about the time he almost knocked over a little old lady in his hurry to leave a restaurant.
I also forgot about the worst offenders, the people who block your way at the end of an escaltor! They stand there like they’re brain dead!!!! maybe they are zombies!!
It always amazes me how they seem blind to the fact that there are people behind them about to get in a pileup!
