Are there certain fashions that are off limits for men or women of a certain age?

Asked by SuperMouse (30853points) March 15th, 2012

I’m in my mid 40’s now and I recently told my husband that I will avoid the current legging fashion trend. Although I was all over the 80’s legging trend. He wondered why, but I honestly cannot see a woman my age wearing leggings. For men, I tend to think of t-shirts with pithy sayings as off-limits past the age of 30 or so. So what are some fashions you consider inappropriate for those of us in the more mature crowd?

I am going to go the other way and ask women under 18 not to wear bikinis. Sometimes I accidentally look and feel icky when I realize it is just a kid.

I am totally not mature… but I am 40. I would love to use leggings but can’t bring myself to buy any.

Other clothes I won’t go near—tiered skirts, off the shoulder tops with tank tops underneath, bubble skirts, legwarmers, scrunched down socks, color-blocked sneakers, phrases across butt pants, rolled down hem Soffe shorts, strategically ripped jeans, big flowers in my hair… Can you tell I work with teenagers?

On the other hand…. I reeefuuuse to wear pastel clothes, big flower print shirts, shirts embellished with rhinestones, ruffled collar shirts—anything that says “grandma” in any way.

I still wear my Beach Boys shirts and who the heck cares?

You only live once….............

I refuse to wear those dam pajamas out in the public.

I think there are fashions that everyone ages out of. I think if you’re old enough to have teenage children, then you are too old to wear skin-tight pants.

Similarly, I think that once you are no longer a child, you should stop wearing poofy dresses. Yes, I think this goes for wedding dresses.

Spandex, lycra, leggings, jeggings, unitards, crop tops, tube tops, any type of pant that displays your camel toe…..........

I am not into the legging trend, but I think someone in their 40’s could easily wear them and look just fine. A lot of fashion has more to do with someone’s body type, their figure, than age. Well, I would say both have importance.

Like low rise jeans for instance. If someone is thin, they can wear them easily until age 60 (not the super low rise see your butt crack even when standing straight, no one should wear those) but even a 20 year old that has a huge fat roll over top of the waist of the jean needs a new fashion. At the same time someone who is 50, in great shape, can wear a halter style top and short shorts and look great, but I think a lot of people might think a 50 year old can’t or shouldn’t.

Fashion is also very regional. Depending on what part of the country, fashion might be more conservative than others. Some cities it is odd to let a bra strap show when wearing a tank top, other parts of the country no big deal, even trendy.

I see nothing wrong with men wearing shirts that stay stuff. Were you also including shirts that say a brand name? Like Porsche? Or, Harley Davidson? Any age can wear those. I do object to swear words or crude sayngs on shirts for any age.

I don’t think a woman over 70 should wear a bikini bathing suit unless alone in her own private swimming pool.

@linguaphile all those things you mentioned look terrible on the teens too. Your list cracked me up. I’ll add to your list those short jackets, bolero jackets I guess, with a long shirt. Especially if the person is fat and her stomach is huge and the she has that little jacket on her upper torsoe, so bad.

I don’t really think it matters what I think of other people’s clothes. Some I like and some I don’t, and it happens with people of all ages and body types. But it doesn’t really matter what I think. What other people wear isn’t about pleasing me. So long as they’re happy with what they’re wearing it’s A-OK.

Headbands. Any age.

@KatawaGrey Awww, I loved my big puffy tulle skirted wedding dress. My sleeves were puffier than I wanted, but Princess Diana cursed all of us with puffy sleeved dresses for years and years after her marriage. It was almost impossible to find a reasonably priced wedding dress with a small sleeve.

If you are over 40, you are too old to wear miniskirts, bikinis. Lots of tattoos. Any shirt that hovers above the belly button without another longer shirt there. Very low-cut pants. And if you are a man, please button that top button. Don’t either sex ever wear t-shirts that say things except to bed. Ha ha thanks very much.

Peek-a-boo bra & crotchless panties are strictly off limits for senior citizens, whatever their gender.

I don’t know… I’d wear leggings and a tunic length top to the gym (as if I would ever go to a gym), and I’m over 40. I’m not a big fan of them on anyone, though, really. I do wear skinny jeans, but I actually look decent in them. (Believe me, I was surprised, too.) It’s not so much that any specific item is off-limits, but I don’t think mothers of teenagers ought to be trying to look like teenagers themselves. So, yeah, I wear skinny jeans, but not with a top and shoes one of my daughters might wear. I adapt the jeans to my style, not the other way around, you know?

@Jeruba The feeling is mutual.
@fundevogel Ok…..now I actually need to get one. Lol.

@Blackberry Yeah, I think that get up is kinda genius.

I wear what I feel I look nice in and am comfortable in. I have never liked tube tops, so will never wear one. Leggings I wear daily with a longer top and sash or belt. They are popular here for over 40s for some reason, comfort I imagine. They also look nice with certain dresses. Sounds awful but depends on the dress. Also good way to cover not so smooth legs.I think bad or good taste reflects at any age, or any body shape.

I was just thinking about how when I moved to Florida in 1990 how many over 65 year olds were wearing leggings with tops that had gold embellishments and gold shoes. It was Boca Raton fashion for sure.
