www.hidemyass.com works just often enough for me (I’m in the Netherlands) that I’ll recommend it. But it doesn’t work always.

What do you normally use?

What is your definition of “legit”? Any service whose point is to lie about your whereabouts is, in my mind, exactly the opposite of legitimate.

@MrItty – No offense, but I suppose you also feel it’s not legitimate to lie to the Gestapo at your front door searching for that Jewish family living in your neighbor’s attic, bleh.

I can only assume you’re about 15 years old. FYI, comparing “not being able to watch a video” to “mass murder” doesn’t prove your point. It makes you look like an idiot.

And I can only assume you’re a moron for thinking someone must be 15 because they disagree with you on the importance of free speech. Or, more likely, you’re a plant from big media.

Oh good god. I have to revise my estimate to 12, due to your lack of reading comprehension. I did not claim you’re 15 because you disagreed with me. I claimed you’re fifteen because you compared “I can’t watch videos free online!” with “mass genocide of an entire race of people”.

By the by, “Free Speech” has absolutely nothing to do with “illegally downloading copyrighted material”.

But what does illegally downloading copyrighted material have to do with this question?

The question says nothing about illegally downloading copyrighted material.

The last I checked, Hulu was a legitimate service for honestly downloading content that is bought and paid for.

So, yeah, I’m 12 because I think if I pay for something, I should be entitled to have it, even if I live outside the US.

Jeez, I forgot the cardinal rule. Don’t feed the trolls. Aaargh!

You didn’t pay for Hulu, unless you paid for Hulu Plus, in which case, you most certainly would have had to provide a billing address. If you lied about your address, why are you shocked that you can’t access it?

Hulu gets to decide to what territories they provide their service. You don’t. Violating the terms of the usage agreement in order to view programming you’re not supposed to have access to IS illegally downloading. This is not a difficult concept to understand.

I just knew this debate would happen when I asked the question, but really, it is all beside the point. My question has nothing to do with your position on DRM. I’m looking for a legit proxy server. The end. By legit, I mean a proxy server that works as it should and isn’t maliciously installing programs that will hijack my computer and compromise my data. I can see how one’s brain could make that tangential leap, but by contextual clues you most likely were able to glean the intent behind the word, and decided to run in the other direction instead just to be annoying. Anyone else care to answer the original question?

@Mamradpivo This is a new problem for me, since I just moved outside the U.S. I tried hidemyass, but I just get a black box rather than the streaming video, although I don’t get the pop-up saying sorry you’re outside the U.S.

There are many proxy servers: Some are free and some are paid. Generally speaking, the free ones limit bandwidth, so if you want to access Hulu, YouTube, Amazon Video, or other streaming video, you’ll need a paid service.

Here’s a few lists of free proxy servers:

http://www.publicproxyservers.com/proxy/list1.html
http://proxy.org/cgi_proxies.shtml
http://www.proxyserverfinder.com/

A proxy server is sometimes called an anonymizer, though an anonymizer is a slightly different animal in which your request passes through several proxy servers in a row (changing the route dynamically in real time).

Here’s some anonymizers, though the paid ones tend to be pricey:

http://www.anonymizer.com/
https://www.torproject.org/
http://anonymouse.org/
http://www.onlineanonymizer.com/
http://hidemyass.com/ (previously mentioned)

Good luck! There are plenty of legitimate and honest reasons to use an anonymizer or proxy: hide your activity from oppressive governments (China anyone?), or purchase movies in regions where they’re blocked by the distributor (and I do mean purchase; while I believe in free-speech, I don’t condone software or media piracy), or to access the web from public wifi hotspots to hide your identity from packet sniffers and identity thieves.

@prioritymail Actually, I asked you specifically what you meant by “legit”, since you were asking how to do something “against the rules”. YOU were the one who decided to get all offended and compare yourself to persecuted WW2 Jews instead of answering the question. If you had simply responded “By legit, I mean a proxy server that works as it should and isn’t maliciously installing programs that will hijack my computer and compromise my data” in the first place, that would have been the end of it. I even would have responded with a suggestion or two. Instead, you decided to pull the “Nazi” and “troll” cards immediately. Think before you type next time, and it will generally lead to a much more pleasant online experience.

You’re confusing me with other posters. You asked me what I meant by legit even though you already knew what the intent was.

So I am. My apologies.
