Can we somehow stop the crazy with Corn Beef and Cabbage on Lá Fhéile Pádraig and move by consensus to something that tastes better?
Shepherd’s Pie perhaps? Is there a sizable population of those of Irish descent who truly like corned beef and cabbage, and I am just ignorant of the charms of the combination?

I love corned beef and cabbage (Steamed with butter. Yum!) and wait anxiously for corned beef to go on sale this time of year.
I also love New England boiled dinner.
Considering St. Pat was actually Italian, I usually celebrate with lasagna or something much tastier (at least to me) than corned beef.
I can’t stand cabbage unless it’s in eggrolls, although I have eaten the corned beef and cabbage before…......
Perhaps I’ll fix up some fish and chips this year. With green beer. =0)
I’m a vegetarian, but I can still remember the yummy taste of corned beef and cabbage. My Mom is making Irish soda bread, and tonight I made a delicious bean and potato soup to go with it.
One of my friends called to say that she was making a chocolate cake with stout ale in it! That sounds pretty good!
I love corned beef, not as keen on cabbage with it, but I love cabbage in other dishes. Corned beef on rye with good deli mustard, yum. Or, on a plate with red potatoes and some veg is good too.
I like shephards pie also, so no problem switching to that, but I prefer it with beef please.
We can Americanize it and make it a Shamrock Shake!~
Howzabout Beer Cheese Soup (which can easily be adapted to be a vegetarian soup). Use Irish beer.
And of course, you’ll want something green, so check out this Broccoli Parmesan Dip Use Irish cheddar.
Potatoes need to be featured in any Irish meal, so you might enjoy Colcannon Irish Potato Salad
‘Course there’s always Irish Stew (altough I can’t figure out a decent vegetarian alternative).
I just finished the most delicious meal of corned beef, cabbage, creamed corn, potatoes and carrots. I loved every bite, and I look forward to the left overs tomorrow.
I can only eat corned beef on special occasions because of the fat content, so I won’t let anyone take it away from me.
@Kardamom Now I remember why I rarely eat in an Irish Pub.
^^ Mmmmmm creamed corn! Just got my Mom a new, already seasoned, cast iron pan. Thinking of making some corn bread, after we make the Irish soda bread : )
Chef I know makes Guiness and Lamb Stew for St. Patrick’s. It’s pretty delicious.
I prefer Smoked Pork Shoulder over Corned Beef any day.
No, we cannot. Corned beef, cabbage, and potatoes is delightful once a year, and goes wonderfully alongside shittons of beer.
You can only omit the corned beef if you are Scoth Irish, then you have the option of substituting haggis for the corned beef and turnips for the cabbage.
And you won’t catch me wearing green tomorrow.
I’d rather have a Full Irish Breakfast. Which is usually pretty much the same as an English breakfast except there will be White Pudding as well as black, and also potato-cake or hash browns, and soda bread instead of toast.
Even though I am not irish I absolutely love corned beef and cabbage for dinner. I am all prepped to cook it for Sunday dinner tomorrow since my sister has to work today and can’t come for dinner. Though not an Irish deserrt, I am making baklava for dessert which I am also looking forward to as well.
Corned beef and cabbage leftovers fried up with mashed potatoes. Nothing better.
I’m not big on the beef but I am a cabbage addict, sooo, I’ll take the cabbage and potatoes…mmmmm! I just made stuffed cabbage rolls the other night.
@Coloma I was just talking to a good friend about cabbage rolls yesterday. I love them too, but I need to find a decent vegetarian recipe for them.
I too no longer eat meat but can remember how delicious corned beef (the lean part of the brisket), and boiled carrots, potatoes and turnips with a little bit of butter and mustard was.
I never did like corned beef but I love cabbage. I usually make it asian style, stir fried with soy sauce, garlic, ginger, chillies, or even steamed with all of the asian spices. It is very good with rice or without rice!
i saute cabbage. with butter, salt, pepper.
and I love a good reuben.
