Am I mature enough to keep watching the show Breaking Bad?

Asked by LuckyGuy (43865points) March 21st, 2012

I was just recently introduced to the show Breaking Bad. I live under a rock with no cable and don’t watch much TV but heard that this one was truly special. Well, I watched the Pilot and found myself hanging onto the couch the whole time! The show is so intense and just does not let up.
I am trying to limit myself to one show per night and am now at Season 2 Episode 2 (the one that ends with a bell ringing). I’m not sure I can take any more. Is it because I identify with the guy? The way he was doing the math in seven thirty seven, or his being a scientist, or having cancer really strikes a chord. Oh my! Does the show continue to get more intense? Is it going to get worse? I’m finding myself strangely worked up and exhausted after each episode. Regular TV like NCIS etc. just seems silly and bland in comparison.
While I really like the show and desperately want to know what happens next, if it continues with this intensity, I don’t think I’m mature enough to keep watching. It takes me too long to wind down.
I thought TV was supposed to be mindless drivel.

I’ve never seen this! Now that you’ve mentioned it I have to check it out! I don’t watch television either, but I really like National Geographic.

Oh man! From the very first instant of the very first show it sucks you in! Be careful.
I hear it can be addictive.

But I don’t get addicted to shows easily!!!! lol. I watched Mad Men a couple of times and it completely bore me….

Same here. I considered TV all nonsense – until this show.
I don’t know it if is just me or not. Do I empathize with the main character too much? He’s seems like a nice guy caught up in a mess and handed a set of problems that would make anyone crazy. He’s been diagnosed with terminal lung cancer, has a pregnant wife and teenage son with MS and is just trying to provide for his family. Each decision he makes just flows logically from the next.
Yep. The show definitely should be rated TV-60. I’m not old enough. Maybe you will be.
Rent the CD or see it on Netflix

It’s a damn good show. I’ve only seen a few episodes, but I look forward to watching the rest of the series on Netflix. Thanks Lucky for letting me know the excitement from the first few episodes doesn’t let up!

It is one of the best shows in the world. The Wire and Dexter are better.

Breaking bad is about to enter its last season. It really keeps getting better. They will leave with every episode being fantastic. They aren’t milking it.

It will get worse. But you still need to watch it. I go pretty far to make sure you can.

You’re a big boy @LuckyGuy, you can handle it. =)

This is one of my all time favorite television shows. It really does make network shows look amateur. Keep watching. You won’t be disappointed.

Are you telling me it gets more intense?1 Maybe I am internalizing it too much. I’m watching it commercial free so there is no break or time to equilibrate, by looking at ads for cars or sleep aids. They also waste no time rehashing what went on before. It just flows. I watched the pilot again and noticed even more details – the names, the colors, the mask, ...
The writers, camera crew, and production people are geniuses. And, oh the acting. Wow!

Ok. I will continue but will not watch right before bed.

Oh man, does it ever get more intense! My husband and I just started watching it last summer. He started working 3rd shift and needed something to keep him awake in the middle of the night during the weekends. We rented the first three seasons and watched the show in marathon sessions, then had to wait for season 4 to come out (we didn’t have cable at the time). We’re caught up and can’t wait for season 5. Sad it will be the last season, though. I’m going to miss that show once it is gone.

How can it get more intense?! The scene with the old disabled uncle answering questions by ringing the bell. Yikes! I couldn’t move!
I just don’t see how the story can end on a happy note. I will continue watching.

There are already a few of the first 10 second pre-scenes that are indelibly etched in my memory: the pants in the air, the light shining through the 5 “vent holes”, the low rider car bouncing maniacally in slow motion…. Clever!

Breaking Bad is a brilliant series. I am a quarter of the way through series three and have series four recorded on cable. Keep watching! One of the best series of the last few years.

LuckyGuy's avatar

Just did another one with dinner. Wow.

And now you are thinking… ‘should I watch another?’ Or do I really have to go to bed? :-)

And Brian Cranston is such a good actor. Can you believe this is the same guy who played the dad in Malcolm in the Middle?

It really does get worse (but in this case worse means better) in Season 4. The constant cat and mouse game with Gus and Jesse as a pawn in the middle gets to be mind bendinly complex. And there is also some incredible additional exposition on the background story of Gus which explains a lot. And that bell-ringing guy has a pivotal role and in the ending as well.

There are a lot of TV shows which I watch while multitasking, either reading, Fluthering or Sudoku but not for this show. You really do need to pay attention to every little nuance.

I just saw the episode with the turtle in the desert. (Season 2 Black and Blue, Negro Y Azul)

Yikes! I’m definitely not old enough!

I am not old enough!!! Just watched Season 3 Episode 7, One Minute. It is incredible. Everything ties into everything else. How do they do it?! My heart was in my mouth during those one minutes. What a fantastic show.

I must say that this is one of the most intricately plotted shows ive ever watched. And that complexity is continually sustained. Just wait till you get to this past season. There is so much bubbling under the surface from the beginning and a lot of back story.

It really is a genius show. And when you get to the last episode of this past season, pay attention to the final camera shot when you think everything’s over and its just background scenery or something. Incredible. Cant say any more as i done want to ruin it for you.

I really don’;t think I’d enjoy the show if I was watching it on TV punctuated with commercials. I’m watching via Netflix . I can stop it and go back. “What did she say?” “Which phone rang? Was it on the bed or in the guy’s pocket?”
Every show title has so many meanings. I wonder about it and then see examples throughout the show. Except for the episode with the title: “I.F.T.” ;-)
This is an amazing show.

I finished Season 3, Half measure and Full measure, and will never listen to the song Windy the same way again. Fantastic! How do they do it? So clever.
Now I need a source for Season 4.

You are now ahead of me @LuckyGuy. I am half-way through series 3 but I got distracted. I am going away next week so I am going to take the rest of series 3 with me so I can watch it then.

I have series 4 recorded on out equivalent of cable. I hope it continues to be as good across the rest of series 3 and 4. Is there a 5 yet?

Buttonstc's avatar

Season 5 will begin in July of this year. Apparently this will be their last season. 16 episodes total divided into two chunks of 8 episodes.

And, yes, the rest of Season 3 and season 4 are just as good, even better. But season 4 takes its own sweet time to reveal all. There are maddeningly slow parts where events seem to be a bit disjointed. But the key word is SEEMS. The payoff in the finale of Season 4 makes it all worth the wait. Incredible.

I haven’t checked yet, but aren’t the episodes available to watch streaming on the AMC website?
