Why do most Harry Potter fans hate the Hunger Games?

Asked by Mtrencher (187points) March 21st, 2012

I’m a Harry Potter fan, and I’m not really excited about Hunger Games but some of my friends who are Harry Potter fans hate the Hunger Games. Why?

“Some of my friends” does no extrapolate to “most Harry Potter fans.”

Ask your friends who hate the HG why they hate it.

Everybody I know is a Harry Potter fan. Many of them have read “The Hunger Games.” Not a one has said anything against the Hunger Games. I think you seriously need to look at the idea that there’s something special about your friends.

Maybe it’s an Apple vs. PC thing.

That’s weird. I loved both (though of course, I’m an adult). I wonder which side the Twilight readers agree with. :P

Settle in a cage match. Two men enter, one man leaves.

Maybe they’ll change their minds when they see the movie. Who knows.

Never heard of either.

Wait, what? I tend to feel like an outsider for being an HP fan, but not a fan of HG (I don’t like 97% of dystopian stories).

Nerds don’t always like all nerdy things. HP is magic, fantasy, and happy times (until the last book. That stuff’s a downer). HG starts out bleak, gets bleaker, and gets only the teeniest, tiniest bit of maybe kinda better at the end (but not really). Reading HP makes me relaxed and mirthful, reading HG makes me think suicide is painless.

Why do most people get the opinions of a few and use it to make blanket statements for everyone?

I’m a huge Harry Potter fan, and also a huge Hunger Games fan. “Most” of my friends are also fans of both series. Your assumption is incorrect.

I haven’t found that. I found most fans of female-authored children’s fantasy series also enjoy others. Harry Potter, Twilight, Hunger Games, etc. (Though I am not implying they are equal!)

fundevogel's avatar

@DominicX I don’t know that the fact that they’re female-authored plays a role. Three series by three female authors is too small of a sample group too make that sort of projection.

laineybug's avatar

I love Harry Potter and the Hunger Games, as do most of my friends.
@DominicX I’m just saying, I don’t like twilight. None of my friends do either.

filmfann's avatar

I love the Harry Potter books, as do several of my friends, and we all loved The Hunger Games.
Hence, your question makes no sense to me.

Count me in as another Hunger Games/Harry Potter fan. Please also count me among those who are not interested enough in the Twilight series to even read the dust jacked. For the record my enjoyment of these books is not based upon the gender of the authors.

I only liked the first book of the Hunger Games. And the HP books I like, 1,2,6,7. 3–5 were misses for me.

YARNLADY's avatar

I’m with @wundayatta on this one. None of the HP fans in my family hate THG.

Was there an actual study done to support that? Incredible.

mazingerz88's avatar

For the simple reason that HP is no more and HG is just beginning.

They do? I like both. I notice more of a trend with Harry Potter fans hating Twilight.

If this is true, my guess would have to be because they get compared so often. As three very popular young adult series, receiving similar mania and media attention, it’s inevitable. Some rabid Harry Potter fans just might not like hearing another series compared to their beloved. I know I feel that way when people compare Twilight, which I personally think is a piece of shit. But I like Hunger Games.

“Harry Potter is about confronting fears, finding inner strength and doing
what is right in the face of adversity. Twilight is about how important it
is to have a boyfriend.” – Stephen King

I would agree that most Harry Potter fans hate the Twilight series.
