Why do you watch movies?
Do you go to be scared at horror films? Do you enjoy watching a pair of lovers fall in and out and in love?
Do you lose yourself in the plot, the fast action, the scenery, or something else?
Do you go to forget about your own daily struggles?
I go to study performances and the elements of the screenplay. If it’s really enthralling, I forget all that and lose myself in the characterizations and the situations and events. I either study or escape.

Purely for entertainment, it really is that simple.
To let the actors have their way with me.
I admire the hell out of a good actor. What an amazing craft! Their medium is, in effect, my mirror neurons. They play my mirror neurons like a violinist plays a Strad. So when I watch a movie, I’m putting the instrument in the hands of the virtuoso.
Primarily because I absolutely despise commercials. I pay for movie channels on my cable bill so that I can avoid watching other channels that have ads every 8 minutes.
Frankly, watching movies is an escape from commercial TV.
While I do follow some actors and enjoy their work, I really just look for a good story. I’m open to all genres, but I mostly watch at home (OnDemand or AppleTV) because I can’t justify paying what they charge at theaters.
I like being entertained. I have too much empathy to see a sad movie or one with a lot of emotional turmoil.
I usually like comedies, adventure (not too deep), and romantic comedies.
I guess to just escape from my real life for a couple hours. It’s fun to put yourself in the story with the characters and just be entertained.
To be happy when I’m sad, sad when I’m happy. To calm myself when agitated, to be disturbed when reticent. To fantasize when paralyzed, to empty myself when erratic. To learn when ignorant, to discover when I’m curious. To explore when lost, to settle when aimless. To shout when whimpering, to breathe when suffocating. To commune.
I go to the movies to walk out both happy and full of new questions based on the movies theme. If it doesn’t engage me at that level, I feel like I’ve wasted money.
They take me away, make me forget stuff that might be bothering me, and mostly, for fun. Especially horror movies. They don’t scare me, or barely. Horror is a passion for me, and I have a real hard time explaining how and why actually, but obviously, horror movies allow me to pursue the passion. Movies of all kinds are a good way to distract oneself and have fun. I even love bad movies, so I can laugh at them.
