How soon can a government employee apply for "status" jobs?

Asked by saservp (291points) March 29th, 2012

I just received a federal government job offer. It’s not an ideal position, but it’s a competitive service hire, and I figure it’s a foot in the door. My question is, how soon can I start applying to “status-only” jobs. From day one, or do I have to wait for my probationary period to end before I have “status”?

You will not have career status until you have lasted 3 years.
For U.S. federal government service anyway.

What do you mean by Status jobs? Anyway, all fedgov jobs have ‘time-in’ requirements, so you’ll only be able to apply for those you qual for; if you don’t have time-in you don’t qual.

What you can do, if survive the probationary period, is review the job postings with regularity and keep your training aligned to the jobs you’re seeking.

Good luck with the job

@DaphneT you are referring to time-in-grade? Yes, beyond the basic requirement that you are no longer “career-conditional” but have made your 3 years and have “career” status, there are requirements about having worked a certain amount of time in the next level down pay-grade to the job you are applying for.

Thus, a grade 7 secretary cannot apply for a grade 15 management position or even a grade 12 administrative assistant, but must apply for 9/11 slots in more or less the same field as currently employed UNLESS there additional factors such as a newly acquired graduate degree in a field relevant to the job desired.
