Are Leukocytes in red blood?

Asked by tan253 (2958points) March 30th, 2012

sorry this could be a ridiculous question.
I have just given birth to a beautiful girl!
My bladder is not working very well and I can’t empty properly, I thought I’d take a chemist test to be safe for a UTI. My nitrates are clear but have ++++ LUC.
Could post partum bleeding cause their to be LUC – (the strip getting small amounts of blood as well from bleeding)
Can’t get into a Dr till tomorrow.
The second test by the way showed less… maybe ++
Thanks!

Yes, leukocytes are in blood, but the UTI test looks for an enzyme (leukocyte esterase) that demonstrates that the leukocytes are actively fighting an infection, not whether the leukocytes are present at all.

Here is a list of other possibilities for false positives:

My biology is a little rusty but I agree with the first part of C’s answer. I just wanted to send you some positive thoughts. Hang in there and congrats on the new addition to your life.

Positive leukocytes is extremely common in the peripartum period and may not indicate anything, but it could be a UTI. Generally the practice is to wait for the culture result.

Congrats on your baby.

If there is a large amount of red blood cell in your urine, then the red color will likely give a false positive leukocyte esterase result on your urine test strip. This is a problem that I often deal with when performing urinalysis in my clinical lab. Most of the time I can centrifuge out the red blood cell and get accurate results.

Make sure that you make it to your doctor appointment.
