What Criterion movie would you recommend?

Asked by mazingerz88 (29220points) March 31st, 2012

Ok, so after having HULU Plus for a year, I just found two nights ago out it has an enormous collection of Criterion films ready for streaming. Wow.

Criterion Films releases on Blu-Ray and DVD, old, classical and groundbreaking films from all over. Asia, Europe and America. I think it would be fair to say that film students and fans of the genre are more likely to be the only ones looking for these old movies.

I just saw Truffaut’s “Stolen Kisses” and it was a real treat-! If you have one you are delighted to recommend, please tell us about why it’s fun, relevant, mind-blowing or just plain odd. Thanks-!

I love the Criterian DVDs, though I wish they were better about captioning their movies.

Criterian usually has films that are required viewing for any film student. Good choices include:

The Seventh Seal (the tale of a Knight returning from the Crusades using a chess game with Death to find meaning to his life)

Diabolique (A murder/mystery like none other)

Rashomon (The Japanese story of 4 points of view of a murder.)

Freaks (the story of a group of circus freaks. More shocking than story, it is a must watch)

M (the story of a pedophile/child murderer being pursued by the criminal underworld)

I haven’t seen many Criterion movies, although I mean to watch quite a few if I get the chance. The one’s I have watched and enjoyed are Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Seven Samurai and Monty Python’s Life of Brian.

Honestly though, I didn’t even know a few of the movies I’ve seen were part of the collection though. I have a friend who has seen more of the collection than I have (especially the French films of the collection), but the only film I know for a fact she would recommend is Breathless.

I went to my local video store to pick up a couple movies after this question. They only had movies that I’ve seen before from the collection though, so I’ll probably be getting Hulu Plus now too.
