Do I need to file a 1099-G that says it's from tax year 2010?

Asked by JonnyCeltics (2721points) April 2nd, 2012

I live in NY now. This came from IL, where I lived in 2010. It’s a small amount and since it says for tax year 2010, I’m confused. At the top it says “certain government payments: 2011.”

Thank you!

I believe it was for some unemployment benefits. On turbotax, it claims it isnt the place to file it

If it was unemployment benefits it goes on line 19. Could it also be a state tax refund for the year 2010, but you didn’t get it until 2011?

yes its quite confusing. i literally got this small postcard from IL. 3 boxes on it. Box 2 with the amount, box 3 saying it was for tax year 2010

That’s an income tax refund. If you itemized your deductions in 2010 you deducted the full amount of state income tax paid. When you did you taxes in early 2011 you got a tax refund. They want you to report that refund as income now. If you took the standard deduction you don’t have to worry about it.

Although I’m not a tax pro, or even an expert, I had a similar situation several years ago. You should probably get a 1040-x and amend your return for 2010. If you used Turbo-Tax, Here is a link for this form from the IRS. I believe you can e-file this form for free.

(You may also want to check with the State of IL to see if you need to amend your state return.)
