What are some things your mother or dad used that adults don't use anymore?

I like to think back and remember things my parents used to use fairly often that people don’t have anything to do with now.

Ok, I give up.
Cigarette holders, Ponds cold cream, house coats and party lines.
Used to drive me nuts trying to call friends when I was a kid and the babbley wonder woman on the party line that tied up the phone for hours! lol
Instead of toothpaste, my dad used this pink powder stuff. I can’t remember what it was called or why he used it instead of toothpaste.
The rotary-dial phone, the mimeograph, and the washing machine equipped with a hand wringer.
House dresses (whatever that meant) , starch for jeans, tooth powder instead of toothpaste, scrubbing boards for socks , ice cube trays, clotheslines for sheets, shaving cream? and witch hazel, manual typewriters, gloves that were short and white for church or a nice luncheon, animal fur thrown over the shoulder, swizzle sticks, ashtrays galore .
The radio knob on my dads 1948 Oldsmobile that stayed constantly on a station that played country music. I did not hate the musicians, i just hated the music they played with those darn fiddles.
Also, those Gillette twin blades razors my dad shaved with. You could count on a cut face.
And, Seven-Up Candy Bars. They were great, but no longer made and Pepsol and Drene Shampoo.
John, I remember those really heavy double edged razors too! LOL
Oh, girdles! My grandmother and her girdles with garters and stockings, took her forever to get dressed. haha
Aster, my dad kept a box full of Septic Pens handy to stop the bleeding.
@chyna that was tooth powder. Tasted good; you can buy it on amazon. lol I remember Colgate was one brand.
Also, my uncle had the slickest hair in town. He was an auto mechanic at a big car dealership in town. We swore up and down that he used axle grease to slick back his black hair.
Another one just hit me, Butch Wax for flat top haircuts. It was color pink in a jar. I used it as a teenager.
White Rain shampoo and Prell were the favorites. Transistor radios that were 2” thick and 6” tall. Black mascara that was a solid chunk with a little brush next to it. You (not me!) would SPIT on it and then slide the brush over. Stretchy donuts you’d wrap your hair around to make a “bun.” Lovely , ironed handkerchiefs folded in drawers. No Kleenex then. I still have a bunch mom and her friend designed. Earrings that screwed on that they called earscrews in west Texas! Hopechests. Telling the phone operator what number you wanted her to call for you.
Metal embroidery rings. Too complicated to explain.
The coolest toy I remembered my father having was an automagic antenna orientation machine.
You turned a knob on a box attached to his stereo and the antenna on the roof would turn to pick up signals better.
^^^^^^^^^ that really sounds familiar! Only YOU know the name of it. lol
Hot rollers, cap style hair dryers, at home perm kits, a water bed, rolodex, potato ricer, macrame, Pearl Drops Toothpaste, Chunky candy bars, Breck shampoo, L’eggs pantyhose (in the giant plastic eggs)——More will definitely come to me. ;)
^^^^^^^ I still use hot rollers! lol My daughter got them for a dollar and they’re perfect. Hairsetter by Clairol. And thanks for reminding me of Breck, too.
@Aster My mom did use her hot rollers until recently, too. She’s moved on to a brush style curling iron now ;)
My Mom used foam and brush rollers. My Dad had one of the first stereo hi-fi’s when they were in a cabinet!
@SpatzieLover OMG, yes, macrame! I made a plant hanger once, it was so ugly. lol
Well, it’s not so much something that people don’t use, but it’s a bit rare. My dad had a tobacco grinding machine. He bought tobacco leaves at this ass end store that sold a buncha weird shit. Like ten leaves for two dollars, and he ground them up in the machine to make his smokes.
This was mostly when he was out of money for tailor made tobacco pouches, but he had a phase where he was using it all the time.
He also used a peculator to make coffee. Nothing people don’t use anymore, but compared to coffee machines, outside of some dude living in a wooden shack or when you go camping, you don’t see em around that much. I don’t, anyways. He had that damn thing for as long as I can remember. It was all stained and old, but he used it like a madman. When he died I took it, and damn man, that percolator made some fine coffee. Nothing like coffee machine coffee, I see why he used it. I lost it though…I suck lol.
Home phones or land lines… and @john65pennington I used to keep a styptic pen for in case I cut my Great Pyrenees nails too short. That wasn’t but about 6 years ago. I think that is what you were talking about? They were used to stop bleeding.
It’s been said already but rotary dial phones (I used, also, until around the mid-1980’s), and when I was little, my mom had the cap style hair dryer. It was like a suitcase, with a plastic shower cap thing with a hose on it. It was a big contraption, and not that hot and not that quick.
When I was little my grandmother used to use this shampoo that was a pink cream in a small jar.
