Airplane etiquette? Safety?

Asked by skfinkel (13542points) April 4th, 2012

Before takeoff, the stewardess had to personally ask the woman next to me to turn off her “book.” We had to wait on the tarmac, and the electronics came back on. When we were to take off a half hour later, the stewardess on the intercom asked for everyone to turn off anything with a switch, but my seatmate kept on reading. What should one do? Ignore it? Ask her politely to obey the rules? Call the stewardess?
I see this all the time with phones as well. What, if anything, should be done?

Consider that this is your safety at risk.

Well, its for our safety at 35,000 feet in the air.

Call the Stewardess and complain.

I would hate to know this woman had my life in her hands.

Scream bloody murder to attract the stewardess’ attention. Stupid woman! Or, elbow her and say, “Turn it off!” loudly enough for others to hear and turn to glare at her. She is the one at fault. Etiquette be damned.

Safety trumps etiquette. I would just press the call button and when the flight attendant came, I would point at the ebook.

I turn off my “portable electronic devices” because it’s the rule and I generally follow rules that are not themselves unsafe.

But for the life of me I cannot figure out how anyone’s safety is compromised the least little bit by “portable electronic devices”. Seriously? “Portable electronic devices” put 4-engine jet airplanes in peril? Cause even a teensy bit of a problem? Really?

Just wait until al Quaeda gets wind of this development, and planes will be dropping from the skies like mayflies. Stupid fucking rules.

Keep quiet; let at least one intelligent person continue to expand her intelligence.

Well, being aware during take off is because there is most likely to be an emergency during take off and landing. Same as having all the window shades up, so you can see out if there is an emergency, out before choosing a side to exit. If she was reading a magazine it is really the same as her electronic notebook, assuming it is in airplane mode. Even if not in airplane mode the chances of it interferring with the instruments is close to zero. The pilots are not going to take off if there is a problem with the instruments. Phones are left on all the time by accident.

If it were me, I would just tell her she needs to turn off her electronic device, we are about to take off. I can’t imagine someone would not just do it for a couple minutes if the person sitting next to them asked.

That freaks me out a bit too when I see it but I don’t have the nerve to say anything. My husband says that if it were really important to the safety of the flight they wouldn’t be relying on individual compliance.

I agree with @marinelife ... I would press the call button and motion to her ebook. People know the rules and if they choose to ignore them, they have to expect to get called on it.

It’s like when you see someone smoking as they’re filling up their car’s gas tank… they might want to blow their heads off, but we don’t have to go down with their ship. Alert someone!

Whilst I would think the woman was a bit arrogant for believing she is above the rules I also agree with @CWOTUS so I wouldn’t do anything about it at all.

You should call the Stewardess and complain about that person. These rules are meant because there are some reasons behind it, so everyone should follow and in case if anyone who is not following, just made a complaint without thinking twice.
