Does anyone here have experience with Iggys (Italian Greyhounds)?

Asked by WillWorkForChocolate (23163points) April 5th, 2012

When our doggy passes away, I plan to eventually get a smaller, shorthaired dog. I’ve been considering a Min Pin or an Iggy. I’m leaning more towards the Iggy, because they’re just so darn cute.

Have any of you had personal experience with Iggys?

We fix their broken legs at our clinic all of the time. I think we’ve probably seen every one in town.

I love Iggys. However, they can be very willful. If you get a willful one, you will want to work with a trainer that specializes in Italian Greyhounds.

You also have to be very careful with them. No dog parks, not a lot around much larger dogs, because they can be easily hurt.

@marinelife Thanks for the info! And I wouldn’t worry about dog parks, anyway, since we have a huge yard.

@WillWorkForChocolate The only one that I know personally has some issues, but I don’t know if it’s typical for the breed. This one poops in shoes and pisses in the bed, has for years.

I have always liked their personalities but they are much too fragile for my house. How about a whippet, they have a bit more bone and not too much more size. Or go crazy and adopt a retired grayhound. I have met some really nice retirees.

I have recently fallen in love with Tenterfields and min pins are cute but a little bit hyper for my taste. But I have a friend who does agility with her min pin, he goes around that course like a mad man and is very mellow afterwards because he is exhausted!

PS, well always called them “skinny guineas” is that not politically correct enough to use anymore?

So… y’all are saying that Iggys are very fragile? Am I understanding that correctly?

I’ve only known one personally. A very sweet, rather shy but playful little guy. He was a beautiful silvery dark gray with white chest and paws. Very striking dog.

Yep they’re fragile, so are chihuahua’s, the little skinny legged dogs. Now Paps are small but sturdy, there is a difference for sure in the different breeds.
