Can I drink alcohol on my prescription medication?
My doctor recently prescribed an acne medication to me called CEFADROXIL. It’s a 500MG dosage that I am supposed to take twice daily. I am just wondering if it is safe for me to drink alcohol while I am taking this medication. I tried to Google it but nothing came up.
Thanks:)

Read the product info sheet that comes with the Cefadroxil. If you go to the company’s website, I am sure you can find it there in case you don’t have the product info sheet anymore.
You should either ask your doctor or a pharmacist. Your doctor is best bet, because s/he will know your medical history and any other medications you are taking that might influence the answer.
I can’t ask my doctor because I am underage so I really shouldn’t be drinking anyway… but of course I’m going to, if it’s safe.
Yes, you can ask your doctor. Just see him alone and ask. He can’t tell your parents unless your state has some messed up law. For that matter, tell him you have a ‘friend’ taking and can he drink? He’ll know you’re talking about yourself but will go with the flow.
How old are you? (If that’s not too personal)
Pfftttt. Well, then, no, you can’t drink alcohol with your prescription medication.
Ask your doctor, doesn’t matter how old you are.
If you are just taking the drug for a short time, I say don’t do anything that might cause a problem. You can live without drinking for two weeks.
If you can’t reach your doctor, at least call a pharmacist.
Oh, pharmacist is even better than the doctor actually. Great idea @john65pennington. They know more about drug interactions.
Alcohol will slow down the drug’s efficacy so would be counterproductive.
“Also, tell your prescriber or health care professional if you are a frequent user of drinks containing caffeine or alcohol, if you smoke, or if you use illegal drugs. These may affect the way your medicine works. Check with your health care professional before stopping or starting any of your medicines.” Source
If, at age 16, you can’t soil the alcohol for two weeks in order to have the acne medication work most effectively you have other issues.
@gailcalled I never said I couldn’t stop drinking, but my spring break just started so there are parties almost every day this week and I would like to have some fun and drink. Also, this is a long term prescription, not just two weeks.
Then talk to your doctor. It is important to not jeopardize what the meds. are designed to do.
Does everyone who goes to parties at spring break need or want to drink?
In an answer you wrote in Jan. 2011, you told us you were 14.
@gailcalled yes. People who don’t want to drink usually don’t go to the parties at all. It’s no fun being the only sober person in a room full of drunk people, half of which you end up taking care of because you the only one who can.
@Julietxx3 Why not start taking the drug after spring break? You don’t have a serious/deadly infection right? It’s just for the acne?
@JLeslie yes it’s only for my acne, which isn’t that bad, my mom just wants it all cleared up by June, which is that day of my sweet 16 party.
@Julietxx3 So you are going to be taking it for several weeks? Just start it after spring break. And, don’t take any stupid risks during your spring break please. I never drank in high school, except for a sip here and there, you don’t have to drink. Make sure your girlfriends use the buddy system to make sure you all are safe. I am not freaked that you want to have a drink, I just worry because I have too many friends that had bad things happen in theor drunken state.
You’re 16 years old. No one should be saying it’s OK for you to drink. I don’t think your parents would appreciate that.
You’ll do what you want .. but I would hope you will read the medication specifications and do what they say as far as drinking.
It’s really kind of sad that not being able to drink is such a concern for you. That might be something you need to concentrate on more. Peer pressure just gets more difficult as you get older. Better to learn to deal with it now on a smaller scale.
If one has to drink at a party in order to feel OK, they probably shouldn’t be at the party anyway.
You are too young to drink.
@Julietxx3 Thanks for being honest about your age. I started drinking when I was 16…but I was a sophomore in University when I did. I shouldn’t have: I was too young and others took advantage of me.
If you would take a moment to look at statistics for teenage women, I think you might be shocked. It is definitely not safe.
The only people who ever gave me shit about not drinking were either people who wanted to take advantage of me or people who had a problem with alcohol themselves. If you go to one of these parties and don’t drink I think you might be shocked at how stupid people act.
Remember, if you get drunk, it takes only one person to give you a lifetime of pain and regret.
Good luck!
Some cephalosporin antibiotics (of which Cefadroxil is one) react quite stongly with alcohol producing unpleasant side effects. So unpleasant that it has been sugested that they could be used therapeutically as ‘anti-alcohol’ compounds in the same way as disulfiram.
Even if you stop drinking alcohol, there are still millions of kids your age that will keep doing it enough to make my insurance way cheaper than yours. Not wanting to preach but a young lady drinking around a crowd of other horny young boys is going to turn into a disaster. Zits will be the least of your worries. Young boys are stupid as hell. When you combine alcohol they are…..still stupid. Ask one.
You are 15 years old and drinking? Rethink this so you will be here for your sweet 16 party.
