Any tips on taking care of the plant "The Wandering Jew"?

I adore this plant. Just got it, yesterday. It needs medium light. I will be in a small room, not directly in front of a window. Every plant that I have had in this spot has died. Not sure why.

I call it a Meandering Methodist.
Water only once a week. Change the soil and repot about every year.
Thank-you. I am going by the name that was attached to the pot.
@Jude: Can you try another spot? That one does seem to be doomed.
I don’t mean to depress you but Wandering Jews are known for their heartiness and inability to kill. It isn’t called a “Wandering Jew” for nothing.
I’d try another spot, underwater, and nip off the Jewlets so that the plant stays bushy rather than leggy. (If that doesn’t work, send it to Hebrew school in preparation for a Bar Mitzvah.)
Details:
Lighting:
Wandering Jews thrive best in bright, but indirect sun light. The brighter the light that you provide for your plant, the more flowers it will produce. The plants deep colors will look faded if the plant doesn’t receive enough light.
Watering:
These plants are happy as long as they’re not kept soaked or allowed to be completely dry too long, evenly moist is the best. If the soil is dry ½ inch down then the plant should be watered.
I know what you meant, @gailcalled, but when I first read it I thought ‘Put it underwater?? What?!’ lol
And I would just like to say that it is quite possible to under-water it too much… if I have a plant long-term, it’s almost a guarantee that it is able to withstand extended drought. I don’t have a lot of luck with these plants, but I have oodles of Christmas cactuses! (I do have several orchids, but they have to live near the sink so I will see them and remember to water them. So far, so good- I’ve had one of them for at least four years now!)
@ccrow; That’s the trouble with our language, isn’t it? Always trying to booby trap us and often succeeding. MIlo laughed. Gail got grumpy.
@gailcalled is right. Wandering Jews are great houseplants for people with “brown thumbs.” You don’t really need to do much to care for them. They are nearly impossible to kill. But follow her advice if you actually want it to thrive rather than just survive.
Thanks!
@ccrow I am pretty excited as my Christmas cactus is about ready to pop. Closed blooms all over it.
Have you circumcised it yet?
Just make sure it doesn’t fall into idolatry or it will never reach the promised land.
I have been waiting for this opportunity.
Show it this
But did you feed him matzoh?
I should. ;)
My g/f bought it for me. She said “I knew that you would love it. Look the name!” She knows that I have a Jew fetish.
Is that wrong? :)
