How do I get Audioboo to work properly?

Asked by downtide (23815points) April 10th, 2012

I would like to record my accent for Jude’s accent challenge, but when I make my recording on Audioboo it’s very, very quiet. Like, with the speakers turned up to full volume, you can only just hear that I’m speaking at all. Are there any other settings I need to be adjusting? There is no additional volume conrol on my mic and I’m using Windows 7 with no additional audio software. What do I do to make this recording audible? Is there something else I need to install? Please talk a non-techy person through the process in easy baby-steps?

Have you got Java installed?
Are you holding your mic close, or is it built in to the computer?
If you double click on the volume control icon, you’ll see there are more than one type of volume controls available. Turn them all up and check if that works.

@MilkyWay – I have a headset which plugs into 2 sockets at the back of the computer. I can’t get the mic any closer to my mouth without eating it.

You say double-click on the volume controls – where? In the Audioboo window somewhere, or in some other program?

No no, on your windows taskbar bar at the bottom, the volume control that’s part of the Windows 7 system.

What is this accent challenge you speak of?

I’d recommend going into the control panel > sound > your mic > properties and then making sure its volume is all the way up.

I don’t know. I just used audioboo for the first time for the same reason, to answer Jude’s accent challenge and didn’t have a problem. I used the mic on my iPhone ear pods and it worked fine. What kind of microphone are you using?

Edit:

@DeanV here’s a link to the accent question.

@lillycoyote Thanks. I’ll have to do that sometime.

@DeanV I checked this and it’s already set to maximum. I’m using a headset that has worked fine for other things; my partner uses it regularly on his computer, and I have used it on mine for Second Life. I don’t know what type of headset it is, I know it wasn’t cheap. As it works fine for him, and for me in other things, I’m assuming that there’s some setting on my computer, possibly in Audioboo itself, that I’m missing.

@downtide: I had a problem yesterday with Audioboo, too. I recorded my voice but could not listen to it from my home computer. i found that I could not listen to any recordings on Audioboo from my home computer. I checked all the speaker volumes and they were all up, none on mute. I knew the accent challenge was recorded, because other Jellies were saying they heard it. I went to You Tube and checked that I could hear videos and I could, so I tried and tried to listen to Audioboo and could not. I had to wait until I got to work to listen to my recording. I still don’t know why I can’t hear any recordings on Audioboo from my home computer.

@jca I could hear other people’s recordings on Audioboo without any problems. Mine was there, just very, very faint.
