What's the significance of this shield or coat of arms?

Asked by Seek (34808points) April 15th, 2012

My dear friend bought a secondhand desk and this necklace was in a drawer. The pendant itself is about 2½ inches tall; with a field of blue, red, and gold; and on the field are a gold crown (blue part) and a gold fleur-de-lys (red part). There is an eagle above the shield.

Is this a coat of arms, or something military? Does anyone know how we can figure out what this is?

Thanks, Flutherinos!

It looks to me like something that’s meant to appear impressive by invoking symbols of political power without actually having any meaning.

The best thing to do is go to a medal specialist outlet. It sounds really pretty. I always get sad when I read things like this, as my fathers medals were stolen from him at the old age home. I think not only the monetary value of them is a huge loss, but also it was all he had at the end of his life.

I am not sure exactly, but the facts that the yellow stripe is curved instead of straight with the contour of the top tell me that it’s more stylized than meaningful. That, and most are only two colors; either a stripe, or quartered, but with the same color on both sides of the stripe/cross.

Here are a couple links with informatin about Heraldry and the Fleur-de-lis. I studied it for a bit when learning my own family crest, but all I can remember about it now is that it was topped by a severed goat head.

It looks French to me because of the colors, the crown and the fleur-de-lis.

Look in a book about coats of arms.

Thanks all.

I’m pretty sure you’re right about the stylized nature. I know it’s not a high-dollar item, as the whole thing is made of resin. We just weren’t sure if it was supposed to be a “pride” item, like the hats you see with the Airborne Corps logos or what have you.

According to Raetta Parker, dark red is associated with vigor, willpower, rage, anger, leadership, courage, longing, malice, and wrath. Light yellow is associated with intellect, freshness, and joy. Dark blue represents knowledge, power, integrity, and seriousness.

According to “heraldry and crests”:, a crown is an emblem of victory, sovereignty, and empire. It is a visible sign of success, thus the term “crowning achievement,” and its significance as the decoration of the ultimate level of rank and power, makes bearing the crown a great honor. Crowns are also sometimes symbols of God, as He is considered by some to be the “King of all.”

The fleur de lis represents a stylized form of the lily. It is the floral badge of France and is known as the “flower of light.” It may represent one who fought for France – or against France. It also became an emblem of political power in France. The fleur de lis represents the Virgin Mary. In Ireland the fleur-de-lis often has a Christian significance. It may also represent the sixth son.

The eagle symbolizes a man of action, occupied with high and weighty affairs. It was given to those of lofty spirit, ingenuity, quick wit, speedy in apprehension and judicious in matters of ambiguity. The wings signify protection, and the gripping talons symbolize ruin to evildoers. The eagle is believed to represent a noble nature, strength & bravery. The eagle is also associated with the sun. As a Christian symbol, the eagle represents salvation, redemption and resurrection.

Since it is made cheaply, it is probably a bit of costume jewelry to be used when someone gets dressed up as a king or something like that, perhaps on halloween or New Year’s Eve.
