It is pronounced however the person with the name pronounces it. Both pronounciations are correct.
I’ve only ever heard it pronounced as your second example, but I’m with @JLeslie it’s up to the person whose name it is.
I worked with a woman who pronounced it like the word “land.” Either is correct.
@JLeslie is spot on. There were two co-workers that had the name Lana. One preferred the first pronunciation, and the second preferred the other.
The pronounciation will vary partly depending on what part of the country you are in, and what national background the person comes from. Northeastern Americans tend to pronounce A’s in general like your land example, Hispanics would always pronounce it like llama, unless corrected. Although, sometimes there is no specific reason, just how the family pronounces the name.
So many names like this. I know Elenas who pronounce ell-eh-na and others e-lane-a. I could give you tons of examples about names. Diana, Jean, Guy, last names too.
Check this out: Lana.
If you look up my name there, there’s a little modification. The last letter “d” is pronounced as “the” (or “thu” in thus).
There are at least three pronunciations I have heard. All have the short a sound for the second syllable, and the first syllable varies between lan, lawn, and lane.
If you want to make friends and influence people, you will ask her her preference, and then do something else. You know. Just to be funny.
Personally, I like it when it sounds more like llama. When its sounds like the word land, then it has a harsher sound. But I’ve heard it said both ways.
Proper sound would be llama
Lana \l(a)-na\ as a girl’s name is pronounced LAN-ah, LAHN-ah. Variant of Alana (Old German) “precious” or (Irish, Gaelic) “little rock”, or Helen (Greek) “light”, or (Hawaiian) “afloat; calm as still waters”. The name also resembles the romantic term for wool: “laine” or “lana”. Made famous by actress Lana Turner
I’ve only heard it rhyming with Llama. There’s a girl in my office with this name.
