What is the correct way to sync my Iphone 4 without losing any data?

Asked by Ltryptophan (12091points) April 18th, 2012

I’ve synced before and suddenly had no pictures. I’ve synced before and suddenly lost music.

I want to avoid changing anything on my phone. I am pretty lost as to how to get this to work.

Problem is I would call Apple and ask them, but my phone is not working because I think it needs the newest OS to function correctly.

So. How do I sync this thing, and get the newest OS going?

Anyone else notice that non Apple products (especially generic MP3 players) rarely have syncing problems?

Please tell us which iPhone you’re using and which version of iOS you are running. Also tell us what type of device (Mac or PC) you are syncing with, and which method you use to sync (WiFi vs. wired).

I generally first Transfer Purchases Made on iPhone into iTunes; then I’ll back-up the iPhone; then I’ll go through each tab (Music, Apps, Photos, etc) to ensure that the selections match what I want on the phone. I store my photos to an external hard drive, so if that isn’t connected to the computer when I sync, it can not find the Library to sync from.

@Charles: What benefit is your comment to the questioner? All devices have issues from time-to-time; and the more the device is asked to do, the more room there is for error. So comparison between an iPhone and a generic MP3 player isn’t really valid.

You transfer purchases first, and transfer your itunes library from pc to pc.

Never had this problem, and I had the iPhone 3G and now I have the 4S. When you plug up your phone and itunes opens up you should have options to “auto-sync”. You want to choose what you sync, not let the system auto sync for you. Any option that says it will auto sync the phone when you plug it up should be left unchecked.

Have you been trying to sync your phone to different computers in order to add more music? THat always causes problems. iPhones are monogamous, they only sync to one computer at a time.
