What cars were popular when you were in high school?

Asked by Charles (4826points) April 20th, 2012

I graduated in 1979. The cool cars were the Z28 and the Trans Am. We had a VW club too because a lot of kids had some kind of VW.

Coolest cars in the lot (late 80’s): Rebuilt cars from the late 60’s. Impalas, Mustangs, Bitchin’ Camaros

What the normal people had: Datsuns, Rabbits, Jettas

SS, Vets, Chevys, Impalas, Mustangs. Pretty much the same ones as now, but a 68 Chevy wasn’t even 10 years old back then! Same with 69 Vets, and etc.

Now you are talking ‘60s Charger, Corvette, VW Bug, Toyota. and Datsun (Nissan) http://www.thepeoplehistory.com/60scars.html
Now laughable car back than was the Honda as it was considered a car with a lawnmower engine. It was a lawnmower and motor cycle maker before making cars 1966

There were no cars when I was young. Only horse drawn carriages.

The 1959 Chevrolet Impala was the car of the century. It was a huge car, by todays standards and plenty of room inside the trunk for six dead people. This was used as a comparison to its volume of room. The trunk on this vehicle was truly unique (see photos yourself on web). The trunk would haul at east 20 cases of Budweiswer beer. (I know ‘cause we tested it ourselves). Inside the ‘59 Chevy Impala was a work of art.

It was truly a “one of a kind” automobile.

I had one kinda-friend with a car in high school. It was a shoddy old VW Rabbit. It was good enough to take us Gnoming, at least. ^_^

Charles, sorry you missed out on the ‘59 Chevy Impala.

We cannot help when we are born. But, the web videos of this vehicle, are really great and should give you some insight on what you missed out on. jp

Yep, I graduated in ‘77 and Camaros’, Trans Ams, Mustangs were the most sought after cars. My friend had a 74 metallic root beer brown Camaro, we were cruisn’. ;-)
We also lost a joint down the heater vent on the dash of her dads Ford Torino, haha.
We lived in fear that the doobie would ignite randomly for months. lol
Memories. ;-)

I got to you use my grandfather’s 66 Ford Galaxy XL. I was lucky enough to get my drivers license at the same time my grandfather when through his mid-life crisis. It was a dark metallic blue with leather bucket seats and the biggest engine Ford made. I had a great time until the cop caught me speeding and parking with my girlfriend. My dad put a stop to it.

I had a 66 VW Beetle when I was in engineering school. The guys in my class had a great time picking it up and moving it into unlikely places, like the school entrance hall.
