How much time do you spend getting ready to present yourself?

Asked by wundayatta (58741points) April 24th, 2012

I imagine there are different time frames to think about this question. For example, you might go clothes shopping once a year, or once a month or three times a week. Similarly with accessory shopping or with purchasing other personal services like hair cuts, or massages or makeovers or whatever you do. Mention the things you do regularly, and how often you do them and how much time they tend to take, including travel time.

There are also things you probably do on a daily basis, like showering, putting on makeup, shaving, choosing an outfit and dressing in it. The timing on these things may vary for week days and week ends, depending on what you are doing. So mention what might cause the timing to vary and how much it varies by.

You don’t have to total the time for me. I’m more interested in getting a sense of how much of your life is taken up by getting ready to present yourself—even if you are only presenting yourself to yourself.

I buy clothes every couple months, but I have a lot of clothes now. I cut my own hair, so all I have to do is shower, brush my hair and put on clothes. Sometimes I may have to iron a shirt.

Every five weeks I get my hair colored. Every other visit to the salon, I get it cut. On visits when it’s just colored, it takes about an hour and a half. On visits when it’s colored and cut, it’s about 2 hours, total.

It takes me about an hour to get ready in the morning, half of which is making and drinking tea and half of which is shower, hair and makeup. On weekends I may have the tea in the morning and not take the shower and get ready till later on in day or evening, and I may or may not wear makeup, depending on where I’m going, so that may shorten or lengthen the time it takes to get ready. If I’m going to someplace where I need to dress, like a party, it may be 45 minutes to get ready. I’m pretty quick about it, have it pretty much down to a science, as far as drying and styling my hair, I wear minimal makeup (for this area of the country where women get quite done up) I just usually wear eye shadow, eyeliner and mascara. I don’t dress up to work so that’s easy.

On a daily basis I take about half an hour to get showered, dressed and make my hair and make up look presentable. I wear eye make up and a little something on my lips but nothing heavy so it take about 5 mins altogether. Usually I will blow dry my hair and then decide whether to leave it down or tie it back.

I very rarely go clothes shopping and when I do, I prefer to do it online. I have my hair cut and slightly coloured every 2 months which takes a couple of hours each time.

I do my own nails, painting my finger nails every one-two weeks, and my toes every 2–4 weeks. It takes at least an hour, whether toes and fingers or just fingers, because the drying time is the biggest part of the process.

I cut my hair about every two months, sometimes I do it at home, sometimes at a salon, about 50/50 during the year. The cut at home takes 20 minutes, at the salon 30 minutes (plus 30 minutes round trip travel time). I dye my hair also about every two months, if I do it at home it takes 20 minutes. At the salon it takes 45 minutes to two hours.

Shaving every other day, an extra 5 minutes in the shower. Tweeze eyebrows and trim every month, takes about 5 minutes.

Getting ready before leaving the house takes 25 minutes if not styling my hair, and no make-up. Add make-up about 5 minutes for every day. Make-up and hair takes minimum 45 minutes to get ready.

I shop about once every two months for something related to getting ready. Might be mascara, might be a nail polish, might be clothing, shoes, undergarments. But, I am saying one or two items of those listed, not a bunch of stuff every two months. About once a year I might go clothes shopping and buy a few garments at once.

If it is a special event, getting ready begins two days before. Tweeze eyebrows two days before, maybe put on some sudden tan product. Double check I am happy with what I am going to wear, shop for any last minute item I might need. Nails will be done a day before or morning of the event, depending on the time of day of the event. Day of the event I need at least an hour to get ready, an hour and a half is better.

About 40 minutes or so I’d say, from shower to dressed and makeup on and ready to go. It takes longer if I blow dry my below the shoulder hair and use the straightening iron on it. I don’t wear eye makeup, no mascara, a little light brown or gold eye shadow on occasion. Only a light sponge on foundation, blush, light matte powder and lip pencil/stick.

Yesterday I applied for a moonlighting stint as hostess of the wine gardens at a popular rafting camp in my tourist community.
I wore a white crinkly skirt, a colorful peasant type top, cute sandles & tossed my hair in pigtails with red and blue beaded ties, a red cut glass necklace and colorful beaded earrings. I received tons of complements on my look. I fit right in my hippie, artsy, tourist community perfectly. :-)

I forgot to mention, I usually shave every other day, on average.

Five minutes to shower; 10 if I shave my legs. Another five to brush teeth, moisturize my face, and spritz my hair. On occasion, it gets blow-dried. Five minutes to get dressed. My hair gets trimmed about every two months, and that takes an hour. No make-up. No mani/pedi’s anymore. A nail file and kept close at hand for keeping them short and neat. Toenails get clipped about once a month after a shower.

I loathe clothes-shopping. About once a year, any necessary supplies get replenished. There are five stores/brands that are used for specific clothing articles, so it is easy to stop in, make a purchase and get out because I know what sizes fit well.

I don’t do much in the shower, rarely shave my legs, but I enjoy the experience so much it generally takes me about 15 minutes. 5 to do my hair and makeup, there’s not much to it. I Haven’t gotten a haircut since March 2011, other than ones I’ve given myself (I still don’t know how it looks in the back).....clothes shopping, I do enjoy a good thrift trip (in fact I’m about to embark on one) roughly once a week. I’ll spend maybe an hour or two there, or at various thrift stores, depending on my luck that day.

@deni Me too. I just went thrift shopping yesterday. Found a cool top and an african drum to add to my collection of hand drums. I love thrift stores.

Unfortunately I’m quite slow when it comes to getting ready. I’m meticulous (...comes with my OCD) at every stage of the process, sometimes it can take me an hour or so.

I go clothes shopping fairly often but don’t buy much usually. I have trouble justifying the purchase unless I need new clothes, which is rare, but I think it’s fun to shop.

I shower in the evenings and I don’t have a showerful of products like the usual female stereotype, I don’t even understand what all those products could possibly be for. I have shampoo and conditioner and soap….pretty basic. I usually wake up with ridiculous hair because I sleep pretty restlessly lately. It takes me about 15 minutes to get it under control in the mornings. I just straighten it. I like my hair right now more than I’ve ever liked it before. It’s a couple inches below my chin in front and shorter in the back. I love how it looks, and it’s easy to deal with.

My hair is naturally curly, and there have been periods in my life where I would leave the house having done nothing to it at all; I liked the way it dried naturally. Right now it’s too short for that.

I never wear make up.

Pretty quick, pretty basic.

It doesn’t take me long to get ready for work. Quick shower, brush my teeth, shave, get dressed, put a bit of wax on my hair (sometimes). Probably 20 minutes or so and would be quicker if I wasn’t so reluctant to get out of that nice warm water.

I go for a haircut once a month at a local barber; 45 minutes including the walk there and back.

I do buy rather a lot of clothes (although I stick to the cheapest, usually), but I don’t specifically have a particular time when I “stock up”. I just buy the odd thing here and there when I have cash to spare.

Sometimes I like to have a long soak in the bath before I go to bed, especially if my knees are aching or if I’m feeling otherwise unwell. Half an hour, or until the water is too cold.

A few minutes, after my shower – which I do even when I’m not going anywhere.

I have to put my shoes on, and sometimes change clothes, depending on the circumstances. My hair doesn’t require any “doing”, and I don’t wear any kind of make up.

mornings
I shower and shave every other day. On opposite days, I wash at the sink with a wash-cloth – no shave. Brush hair and teeth. Moisturize and powder. Get dressed.
total time: 30-minutes

haircut
Every two months. Comes with a wash, eyebrow & ear trim, and a neck shave.
total time: 30-minutes

clothes
I buy clothes once a year – at Christmas. And truthfully, my wife has bought them for me probably the last ten years. If she didn’t buy me clothes, I’d probably wear what I have until they fell apart.

shoes
When they start to fall apart. About every two years.

I can be ready from head to toe in about an hour, a little more if I put on more than just my daily lipgloss.

Once a month I get a massage for an hour and drive about 10 mins. to be there.

Twice a month I get a mani/pedi which takes about 1.5hrs total. I drive about 5 mins to be there.

Twice a month I get my eyebrows threaded, another 5 mins. drive away from home.

I buy some article of clothing once or twice a month and it’s usually online.

I work a lot of hours so my clothes needs revolve around my job. It’s a treat to shop for non work clothes. Not a lot of time goes into worrying about my “presentation” because my closet is kept organized and clothes in ready-to-go condition. Sometimes I miss being able to sit for a few hours all by myself to do something extra pretty with my hair or pay more attention to makeup but I guess I don’t really care enough or else my “presentation” hasn’t been an issue enough for me to spend more time on it.

@Coloma I went today too and I thought “oh no I’m gonna spend a ton of money I don’t need to spend” cause I took a million promising things into the dressing room….I didn’t end up buying anything! I was very proud of myself, but I’m gonna go tomorrow again cause I need to get my fix eventually loll

My disability has worsened over the past 4–6 months to the point where I’m no longer able to walk or stand at all, so it takes me a lot longer to do everything now. Getting up, getting to the bathroom, bathing, toileting (I’m also doubly incontinent) and dressing takes me about an hour and a half. I get my hair cut about once every 6 weeks.
