Why do pleated pants out number flat fronts at Goodwill and other thrift stores?

Asked by Izyegk (14points) April 30th, 2012

Why are there more pleated pants than there are flat fronts at Goodwill and thrift stores in general? I’m talking mostly men’s pants.

In general there is a lot of older folks clothing at thrift stores. I think they tend to wear pleated pants more than younger folks. So especially in areas where there is a good deal of older people, there is a lot of pleated pants. And if it’s a shitty thrift store that contributes too. Goodwills are shitty, and overpriced in general, in my opinion.

There’s also a lot of outdated clothes in thrift stores. Pleated pants were all the rage many years back.

Because they’re so ugly that more people wanted to get rid of them?

I agree with all the above; I think it’s because they’re out of fashion and everyone is getting rid of the ones they have.

Yes you will find all the brand names for less at GW but they are apt to be out of style. Are Dockers still in?

Now that is interesting, they are now showing them again here. More in the boyfriend type slacks, where you roll them up a bit. I actually like pleated pants, always have. Wish I would have saved mine from last time they were in fashion.

But I haven’t seen them in any of the 2nd hand stores here.

Well, if they’re anything like the ones in the UK, half the stock comes from donations by dead people (if its a charity) or home-clearances… of dead people (if it’s one of the more young/warehousey types).... hence all the tweed jackets, pleated trousers, and soda-streams!

I think those places are great, I just got a soda-siphon for £3, an elaborate vintage cut-glass decanter for £10, a sleek deco tea-pot for £3, antique “Made in Sheffield” cutlery 10p an item, as well as all the cheap clothes, dress shirts for 50p, rain jackets for 75p….

There is actually such a massive abundance of clothes in the US, that I know places in the UK, where they import huge compressed blocks of used clothing, paying by weight, to resell in bare-bones ‘vintage’ stores; even at less than £1 an item they make good profits….

Maybe it just seems that way, perhaps “flat fronts” are sold out quickly making for a de-pleated supply.

That was unseamly, @ucme.

Had me in stitches anyway.

@ucme It was only sew-sew. Perhaps on another thread….

@janbb Yes indeed, not tailor made for general it’s true.

“In general there is a lot of older folks clothing at thrift stores. I think they tend to wear pleated pants more than younger folks. So especially in areas where there is a good deal of older people, there is a lot of pleated pants.”

This sounds pi radians backwards. If a lot of older people demanded pleated pants then there wouldn’t be a lot of pleated pants for sale because they’d be all sold out. The thrift stores can’t control their supply. It’s not like “Old people like pleated pants so let’s get people to donate them to us so we have a lot of supply.”

@Charles Yes, I was thinking the same thing. Pleated pants are out of style, so that is what people are throwing out of their closets.

One other possibility – people buy them without trying them on, then realize how much they emphasize issues with the abdominal region. They wear them once or twice and put them in the donation pile.

because everyone comes to the realization one day, that pleated pants are atrocious, and it’s better to clothe the poor with them than to waste the resource!!! LOL Great Q.

rooeytoo's avatar

I don’t know how anyone could say this is not a good (hot) look for a guy!

And this for a woman.

Skaggfacemutt's avatar

@rooeytoo Ugh! I do hope you are being sarcastic.

rooeytoo's avatar

I absolutely was not. I think they both look great!

Skaggfacemutt's avatar

@rooeytoo We will just have to agree to disagree on this one!

rooeytoo's avatar

@Skaggfacemutt – link to some pics of the look that you prefer and if it is those hideous skinny leg things with the crotch around the knees and bum hanging out, heheheh, I will seriously expire!!!

Skaggfacemutt's avatar

@rooeytoo Heavens, no! I prefer the cowboy look. Worn, relaxed-fit Levi’s around a tanned, muscular torso. If the button is missing, all the better.

Oh, I guess I should clarify that I am talking about men. The pleated-pants look that you linked to (to me) looks like a guy with a good body and wearing his grandpa’s pants.

The girl’s outfit, to me, looks like a polyester nightmare. The shirt is baggy and formless, the hip-rider jeans are riding on NO hips, and the material looks like it is sticking to her with static electricity. She would look a hundred times cuter in a pair of flair jeans and a baby tee.

Sorry I can’t give you links. I don’t know how. :(

@Skaggfacemutt – hehehe, okay.
