Who was the best HULK?

Asked by filmfann (52487points) May 7th, 2012

Or more accurately, Dr. Bruce (or David) Banner?
Eric Bana? Edward Norton? Mark Ruffalo? Bill Bixby?
Yes, Lou Ferrigno was the living embodiment of the Hulk, but Dr. Banner is much more complicated, and difficult to portray.
What actor would you suggest be offered the role if they change it again? Sensitive, peaceful, and liable to explode at any provocation? paging Mel Gibson

Pretty sure the hulk didn’t explode out of antisemitism, egomania, and sheer crazy.

I’m rather fond of Bill Bixby. I remember as a little kid my dad smearing mom’s green eye shadow all over his face, wearing a ripped undershirt, and shoving over rotten pine trees while yelling “Arrrggh!”.

@syz is that the reason he gave when he got caught in your mothers makeup?

At this writing I haven’t seen The Avengers.
Eric Bana didn’t seem right for the character. I loved Bixby as a kid, and thought Ed Norton got it just right.

I liked Edward Norton. He had a good balance of nervous small guy and “you don’t want to make me angry” guy.

I have to say that whoever played the Hulk in The Avengers was fantastic! I really liked this movie. The acting was damn good all around. These are cartoon characters and they came alive in a believable way…. to ME!

I was amazed at his normal life character. I was thinking to myself what kind of movie had I gotten into? Where was all the cartoon dialog? They actually made an effort to make it make sense and the lines were delivered with complexity.

Of course, I didn’t see The Hulk in any of it’s other movie versions. So I can’t compare. All I can say is that I really liked this movie and I didn’t think I was going to. There was self-knowledge and character development that made me feel like this wasn’t just a cartoon.

Ruffalo. I liked Edward Norton as well. Bill Bixby was kind of a downer.

I have mixed feelings about the actors. I think Norton and Bixby were both very good at what they did. I think Ruffalo has the advantage of playing a Bruce Banner who is a lot further along at accepting his fate, and has a sense of humor about it.

That other Hulk movie was so bad I only really paid attention to Jennifer Connelly.

Truth is these actors were all very good. They did their respective roles quite impressively. It’s a tie for me. But who is the best Hulk?

That one that turns green and gets all big and muscely and rips his shirt off. Oh, wait…...

I have seen all of the performances you mention and my favorite Banner was Mark Ruffalo by far. I loved The Incredible Hulk and even had a little crush on Bill Bixby, as a grown up though, I think Ruffalo’s Banner blows Bixby’s out of the water. Mark Ruffalo was just so calm and mellow and matter of fact about co-existing with “the other guy” it was awesome and really one of my favorite things about the movie.

I’m going to lose a little of my nerdiness when I tell you this… I’ve never seen any Hulk(s), except Lou Ferrigno when I was young, and just recently Mark Ruffalo in the Avengers. I really dig Mark Ruffalo as the Hulk. I guess I can’t make any comparisons, though, since I haven’t seen the others. Perhaps my inner nerd needs to watch the other Hulk movies.

Mark Ruffalo.

With the benefit of hindsight, Lou Ferrigno looked like Shrek in a shit wig.
As for the best potential candidate to play Banner, I pick Pee Wee because he looks like he has a nasty temper on him.
