What can I do to relieve my severe tonsillitis?

I went to the doctor yesterday and was told I have tonsillitis. One of my tonsils was literally the size of a ping pong ball. I was prescribed an antibiotic called Augmentin and was told I’d be better soon. However, the pain I am in right now is horrific. I can’t swallow very much at all either.
Do any of you know anything I can do for relief? What can I do to put myself on a faster track to recovery?
Thank you.

Can you call the nurse at the doctor’s office and ask for help? The doctor has an obligation to help you deal with the severe discomfort.
Ice cream to tide you over.
@gailcalled Unfortunately, they assessed that my discomfort would go away soon and they couldn’t treat me further.
Safe tips from here
“The following tips may help your throat feel better:
Drink cold liquids or suck on popsicles
Drink fluids, especially warm (not hot), bland fluids
Gargle with warm salt water
Suck on lozenges (containing benzocaine or similar ingredients) to reduce pain (these should not be used in young children because of the choking risk)
Take over-the-counter medications, such as acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen to reduce pain and fever. Do NOT give a child aspirin. ”
Gail here; For gargle, use 8 oz. warm water to only 1 t. salt.
Any time. I am surprised that the medical staff didn’t tell you this stuff.
A fairly effective OTC topical anesthetic is Chloraseptic. The red kind doesn’t taste too bad, the green sucks on toast.
How about on a bagel? Better?
They don’t do tonsillectomies routinely like they did when I was much younger? Heck! My brother even had his adenoids out (whatever they are)
Bagel, english muffin, scone, pretty much anything.
Banana popsicles will help. Suck on two or three.
Banana popsicles are better than any other flavor, simply because they have less acid and you do not want acid on sick tonsils.
Ice cream is out. It forms a thicky goo in the back of your throat and popsicles do not.
