Extreme crying fits?

Asked by Reggz (149points) May 8th, 2012

I just started taking Wellbutrin XL 150mg like a week ago.. and I’m a wreck. I’ve been having crying fits over nothing and I am constantly on the verge of tears. Is this a side effect of the medication? I usually never cry.

You need to contact your doctor right away and let him or her know that the Wellbutrin is having this effect on you. I mean, really, call your doctor, if not right now, tomorrow! You may need your medication adjusted or be put on another medication entirely. Please, call your prescribing physician and discuss this with your doctor as soon as possible! Some anti-depressants can actually increase depression in some people and that is a serious issue. Call your doctor.

I agree with @lillycoyote , contact them asap!

I was diagnosed bipolar 2 about 3 years ago. One of the meds I took made me have “rapid cycling”..meaning I’d cry one minute and laughing the next. I mean literally minute to minute, and also tried to choke my dog. I wasn’t even aware of what I was doing until I heard him choke. (II had gotten really angry about something.)

I didn’t hurt him, I would never purposely hurt him, but it was weird.

I take 150mg of Welbutrin and seem ok. Could not take 200mg, made me a zombie. Same with 300mg of Lamictal. It also caused a lot of weird side affects, not the least of which were spells of rage. Those have simmered down/aren’t so strong.

Good luck, I know it isn’t easy!

Definitely call your doctor as soon as you can. You may just need to re-adjust your dose or you may need a different medication all together.

Let me fourth calling the doctor. I know someone who takes that drug and they have not experienced any side effects, but each person is different. Here is a link to a forum discussing this symptom with Wellbutrin.

I agree with everyone above. Call your doctor in the morning. Some doctors will recommend sticking with that type of drug a minimum of 6 weeks to see if side effects let up, but I hope yours will just switch you to a new medication. I really don’t think you should take it.

Are you taking it for depression or stopping smoking?

It’s a two edge sword with anti-depressants in that they will adjust your mood and depressed feelings which can allow for the emotional feelings to surface that the depression was keeping surpressed inside you. I saw this very thing happen with my son and you may need talk to a psychiatrist about other medication options that can enhance the performance of the anti-depressants. I am not a doctor but just speaking from very recent personal experience I have had with these medications.

This is serious. Take the advice above.

This is why the psychological community requires you to see a doctor while you are taking this drug.
