Jellies who are very neat and organized: do you pass on stocking up on items you find on sale?

Asked by JLeslie (65743points) May 8th, 2012

I was just thinking the savings isn’t worth it. I like things neat and organized, and negative/empty space. I am not great at organizing, especially at finding a place for everything, so I am leaning towards not buying something until I really need it and see how that goes. I recently could not go grocery shopping for a few weeks, and I loved how my pantry had less stuff in it.

Also, how often do you sort and purge? Daily? Weekly? Monthly? Are you just incredibly diligent about keeping everything in order? Or, do you also have a lot less stuff?

When, less and less often, I bring something new in (like a new mop), I get rid of two things.

If I buy a new t-shirt, I cut up two old ones for rags.

As I age, I find I need less and less; every item that I used to think was a treasure has to be dusted, polished or repaired.

I take books, DVDs and CDs from the library or listen the the radio; I swap plants and seeds with my gardener friends; I give away any doodad or trinket that someone admires and I am hoping that my nephew will furnish his small week-end home from my store of possessions.

Now that banks, brokerage houses, docs and dentists have my info in their data bases, I keep very little real paper…mainly five years of back tax returns and the docs. to support it.

I’ll buy the things we need in bulk when they are on sale. I’ve just extended where we keep food and supplies to accommodate for it.

With food, we buy in bulk and on sale exclusively. I have two pantries, one in the garage and one in the kitchen. I keep the newest food on the left side, and slide the oldest to the right, first outside, then carried inside as needed.

With household items, we only buy something new when the old breaks, and then it goes to Freecycle.com. I have often gone without for several days or weeks until I find the right price to replace items. I once bought two toasters at a close out price, and when one died, I put it on Freecycle, then opened the second one.

Yes, yes I do pass up on stocking up. So much clutter (shudders)
I hate stocking up…unless it’s books I’m stocking up on ;)

Sometimes I’ll take advantage of the sales and stock up. It’s only cost effective if you see it that way. Many people I know count the pennies, but do not count their own peace of mind, available space, and wastage due to lost or expired items as part of the cost. I’m just now coming to believe that I can part with many of the things I’ve accumulated thinking that I’d need them. I am a pack-rat, and I’ve spent many years re-training my family to not discuss it with me as it will only make me want to keep everything they think I should get rid of.

Oh @DaphneT I am the same.
Don’t pester me about it and I will do it on my own, even more than than they might think. Mention it and I’m done.

We pretty much buy the same foods all the time and there’s not a lot that’s canned or boxed “pantry” stuff. I don’t like having shelves of toilet paper or paper towels at home but that’s how Costco does it and that’s where I bend.
