How important is it to keep apps updated on a smartphone?

The apps on my android device alert to be updated pretty frequently. At one point I purposely ignored all updates for a month, and didn’t notice any change. I’m assuming the updates do little things like change lines of code that wont go noticed, so how important is it to keep the apps updated? Why do they request an update so frequently? How often do you guys update your apps?

Most updates are aimed at patching potential security threats, so if you do anything that you wouldn’t want to share with hackers, or tether anything to the phone, or download anything you wouldn’t want a virus in, keep apps current or ditch them if they aren’t worth the trouble.
