Can you speed up the ripening of an avocado?

Or do I have to accept it as it is and wait for it to soften on its own timetable?

Yes. Like some other fruits you can place them in a paper bag and seal up the bag. Ripening fruits give off ethylene gas when they ripen and that traps the gasses inside the bag. If you have another piece of already ripe fruit, a ripe banana is good, you should put that in the bag with the avocados.
My mom used to put them in a paper bag then put it on top of the fridge….it works never asked why…....
Yep, the paper bag trick works well. Mmmm, Avocados, had one in my salad tonight. :-)
The best is to wrap them in newspaper!! :D
