What's a good edger for my lawn?

Asked by glenjamin (2505points) May 16th, 2012

What features should I look for, or what specific brand or model should I get? I want something that is going to do a good job, and last a long time.

You can’t beat craftsman. The people at sears have a Good, Better, Best marketing strategy. Their “Best” really is a good deal when you find it on sale.

I don’t know very much about them, but the one we own we have to mix the gas with oil I think, can’t use straight gas. That is something to think about, do you want gas or electric? They may even have ones you charge and works on batteries? Not sure. We have a very big lawn, so my husband chose to not have to worry about long extension cords. Ours has a plastic wire that is whipped around to do the cutting, it works pretty well. We own a Craftsmen and we have never had a problen with it. We have owned it over six years, and our grass grows about 7 months a year.

If there are options that use a different system than having to use the plastic wire I would consider it, to not deal with having to put it in so often. I guess the good thing about it is you can get really close to trees and not risk damaging a blade. Even a blade you need to replace or sharpen eventually.

I have both a gas and electric edger (blades). Also, I do all of my own yard work. Besides the edgers, I also use a typical weed wacker (string) to keep up the maintenance. Plus, I use a shovel and/or a trencher (gas) to do planting beds.

I have some questions for you:

Will you be doing stright line edging?
How large is your yard?
How much edging do you have to do? (Sidewalk, patio, driveway)

I just use my whipper snipper or weed whacker, whatever you call it. Do you mean you want a more specific tool? I thought that is what they were designed to do, weed whackers I mean???

@SpatzieLover I will do straight line (sidewalk) and also curved gardens. my yard is pretty big but I’d say mid-sized for a suburban house. I plan to use the edger monthly or as often as necessary.
