Why is my icons from desktop and start menu missing in windows xp after start up?

I have Windows XP profesional with service pack 3. After the welcome logo the wall papper appears, but no icons or start menu bar.

Try the following:

Press Control+Alt+Delete keys, (The dialog box for Windows Task Manager opens)
Select the File menu, then New Task (Run), (The dialog box for Create New Task opens)
Type in “Explorer” (without the quotes)
Press OK button.

Hopefully Windows Explorer restarts with the Taskbar and Start button.

Also, right click anywhere on your desktop, mouse over on “view” and make sure “show desktop icons” is marked.

Actually encountered this virus on a work computer recently. The icons are there, just hidden and/or moved. He user had open a bad attachment.
